CPU Pentium 4 - Max Temperature

Hi All

New to this forum and I have a simple question

I have read that the Intel Prescott fans run hot - I have an Intel Pentium 4 550 Prescott Socket 775 LGA

Does anyone know whether running this at 70 Celsius will damage the CPU??

How does heat affect the longevity of a CPU?? Can anyone explain this please?

Thanks very much

70 is about the max you should see, ideally around 60 would be better.

Thats when you are doing something intensive aswell, should be 40 or less on idle.

Well the background to this is that I have a rather loud fan (Akasa blue) which is much quieter at low revs.

MY motherboard does not support Power Management at the CPU level (and therefore the fan runs at full force)

I have used SpeedFan to reduce the fan speed which means that the temp gets to about 70 C

Is running a CPU hot actually dangerous? If so how>?

if it gets too hot you can damage the cpu.

Prescott Pentiums run very hot. Are the temperatures you're getting load or idle?

It may be advisable to remove the cooler and reapply some new thermal paste.

Dont forget prescotts had massive idle current leakage problems. Their idle temps are massively higher than modern chips like Core2 duos.

It wasnt that uncommon to idle 60+ and higher, yet still have load temps under 80.

Obviously the case fans can make just as much difference as the cpu cooler. If your case is cooled by a pair of low speed 120mm fans (say 1000rpm with 25cfm), then you'll be on the hotter end of the scale.

It takes a lot of cooling to get a high end prescott down to what most people consider "normal" for a modern chip.

For Prescott P4's ignore the idle temp. Whats it putting out when its under heavy load.
