Volvo D5 S60 - any good?

My job situation may well change in the near future, possibly resulting in a requirement to commute 35 miles each way, a good deal of which will be on the M25 going past the M3 and M4 junctions.

Having had a good think about it, the Volvo S60 D5 has caught my eye. Looks like it would be fairly economical, comfortable, easily available as an auto (a good thing on the M25) and is considerably cheaper s/h than the equivalent German motor. The handling bias towards comfort really isn't a big deal to me, can always take the Bimmer if I want to make my passengers queasy.

Any thoughts or experiences with similar Volvo's?

Before you ask, I've thought about the following:
Mondeo - obvious option and clearly cheap. Problem is that a friend of mine has a 2ltr diesel (what I'd probably look at) and every time I've sat in it or driven it, I get out wondering what all the fuss was about. Just feels like the auto equivalent of a Zanussi.
E46 diesel - not cheap and the higher mileage diesels have their reputation for eating swirl flaps. I know that I could run a petrol, but I'm guessing that I'd save approx £1200 in fuel alone by going with a diesel.
Merc E class diesel - even less cheap, but bearing in mind the interstellar mileage ones that you see advertised, might be an interesting long term option that could be kept for years to offset the initial price.
Civic 2.2. Don't **** them off till you try one. Brilliant car, but not available as an auto and as they're quite new, isn't as cheap as the Volvo.
MX5 - Another "don't ask". Doesn't fit any sensible criteria, but I've just seen a lovely 99' 1.8S advertised for peanuts. I know that I could get mid-high 30s out of it and the depreciation might offset the fuel costs. Problem is that I'd rarely get to use it the way I should because of now having a very young son. Having said that, I really enjoyed my last one and know that it's reasonably comfortable at normal speeds and would still make me smile every morning (unlike the Mondeo).

Yup, very good cars, you've got valid reasons for ruling out the rest of them (although I'd obviously disagree about the mondeo :p)

Not sure where the MX5 came from, but never mind :)

Make sure you go for the SE model.

My mate has a petrol 2.4 S80 SE and it's by far the most comfortable car I've ever been in. The seats are incredible. You'll get the same interior in an S60 SE, I think.

I hear injectors cost an awful lot of money to replace if they go in the D5. Not sure if it's a common fault, though.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Any known issues or obvious things to look out for?

Make sure its chipped (Costs £350 ish otherwise)

Upps power from 185 to 222, and torque from 400 to 466 and MPG from about 35 to 40.

Have it in my dads V70 and 300 miles in France was a a peice of cake, I love it so much in fact I'm going to buy it off him when I get a job at the end of uni :p

I thought chipping/remapping went without saying.

It's an unwritten rule. :D

Yes, very good, comfortable, reasonable handling, good build quality, excellent stereos.

I like em :D

I think you've missed a point here, it's being bought as a motorised armchair to waft me around the M25 during rush hour.
As such, I have pretty much zero interest in making it any faster, particularly so with it's probable handling capabilities.
More importantly, I can then spend the dosh on something more interesting.

I was just about to reply saying how pointless a remap would be, based on my assumption of your usage, but you've made the point much better than I could have done :)

A colleague at work has mentioned that Volvos go through light bulbs pretty quick (not a big deal I know but I thought I would mention it)

He is a bit of a Volvo fan and has owned about 5 different models and has just bought a new S60 last month.

They are very good motorway cruisers, but do you need two cars? Are you sure the fuel saving won't be outweighed by the two lots of road tax, MOT's, servicing and insurance?

I can assure you that it's not two cars just for me. This would be my commuter, the missus uses the Bimmer to get to work (much closer).
Funny really, her description of why she likes it is because of the "woosssh" factor.

Ah, in that case it sounds like a good idea :)

The S60 might also make an interesting long distance tourer for going into Europe. Whilst I know the 330i would be more fun, thoughts on the fuel costs when it would spend most of it's time simply cruising is enough to make my credit card cringe and I struggle to believe that I'll be able to make my son puke quite as easily as I did one evening after joining the M25 from the M3 in shall we say a "positive manner whilst making good progress".
