Guitar Hero vs the Guitar

While playing an instrument can be very rewarding, learning to play just isn't much fun. It's very different to thinking "I want to waste 15 minutes and have a good time, I'll play guitar hero for a bit". No one goes into guitar hero thinking "I'm going to learn how to play the guitar with this" they've already made the decision to spend that time playing a game rather than playing an instrument, why is it suddenly bad if the game then allows them to imagine they're really playing the instrument along to their favourite songs?

I enjoy playing it as a game online with friends or offline with my brothers playing whatever songs we want. I have no desire/interest to learn a musical instrument.

It's a video game version of 'air guitar' , purely for enjoyment and maybe even feeling like a bit of a rockstar without the years of dedication needed to excel in guitar (for most people)

Muso's need to get over themselves really.

It's a game. Get over it. Were a society that need instant satisfaction!
If anything, it may encourage people to actually pick up an instrument..

For kids is a great stepping stone into the real world of music , theres too many crapp bands that imo aint worth making it onto guitar hero , id rather play my axe , mind you now the drums are available for GHWT it does seem a lot more appealing, id rather spend my money on real music equpment than games that are very average with a 50/50 chance of the songs being good ,

synthesia for the pc allows you too plug in a midi keyboard and learn any song you want as long as you have the midi file , gimme that over guitar hero any day :)

I played guitar and gave up because I got bored :/ To actually get good takes such a huge amount of time.
It used up a lot of money and it got to the point where it just wasn't fun.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band take away the boring part, they let you play songs that you know and like and don't take horrendous amounts of time to learn. You don't have to replace broken strings, or have to go online to get tabs or w/e. Everything you need is in front of you.

Some people play the game WAY too much, though, but it's just like any other game. All the people who've spent 1000's of hours playing WoW could've done other things that are more useful but they don't... because that would be harder :P

Whoever thinks playing drums on rockband etc is similar to real drumming, please do yourself a favour and be quiet :P

How come? Don't they do drum practice kits that are basically pads. Just so you can learn co ordination, timings and keeping multiple rhythms going? My friend has one and it's just drum skins on a frame. What's the difference between that and GH/RB? I suck at the drums on RB because I can't keep 2 beats going. I get lost when I have to use the bass pedal.

Anyway. Guitar hero is about reaction time. Something I'm quite good at. So I'm good at most reaction based games. DDR etc.

I play GH because I enjoy listening to music. It's just another way for me to enjoy my music. F U N. Me trying to play some thrash metal on a guitar is not fun.

My friend plays guitar and GH. We play together when we go round each others houses. So I think I have just divided by zero?

yes they do but electronic kits are a different concept to that of a computer game kit. but does gh/rb teach you rhythm? teach your style, teach you accents, no. its just play along to colours on a screen to the music.

I found that out a few weeks ago - it's actually really different and teaches you nothing about real drumming!

exactly, the hardest/expert settings dont even come close, that kid in that video that margaret posted has no feeling/emotion groove nothing, its utter crap playing.

No I wasn't on about computer drums. These are just skins on a frame and they look a lot like GH/RB drums only with a proper bass pedal which again just hits a pad. They make little sound other than the sound of the stick hitting the pad... if that makes sense lol.

Teach you rhythm. Well you are trying to drum along to a rhythm so I would guess so. I'm not saying if you can play GH drums you can play real drums. But I dunno lets make up a example:

I have a real drum kit, I put a song on repeat. I try to play along to it. I assume they do sheet music so I'm reading that as well trying to play along. It's taking its time to get into my head and I keep forgetting parts.

I have RB and the fake drums. I choose the same song. I'm seeing the steps come down the highway. Equivalent to very basic sheet music no? Like guitar tabs. It's not going to teach you much you are right, no style and no accents (not sure what they are lol). But isn't the principle there? This pad makes this sound, hit it, then hit this one while hitting the bass. The timings are there.

I mean I can't be wrong in thinking this seeing as the videos I see on youtube of people playing the game normally have a real drum kit and play themselves. Plus musicians connect the fake drum kits up to their pc and use them as midi controllers.

I can't compare GH to guitar because it's 5 buttons. Pretty easy stuff. No chords, no hand techniques. I started to learn guitar and bass before GH came out but I lost interest. I have gone back to piano/keyboard as it's something I enjoyed as a kid.
