I have got a Sony a200 with the standard kit lens and am going to an 18th birthday party on Friday night and they want some photo's to remember the night by. I suspect the venue might be quite dark and I'm quite new to the dlsr photography (have an understanding of apature, exposure and shutter speed though).

Has anyone got any advise as per what exposure settings to use whilst there, or any tips to try and get the best photo's I can get

Thanks

low light you need

a comination of:

flash, high ISO, wide aperture and as slow shutter speed as you can get away with

very difficult to give settings as it depends on the environment and the ambient light

i dont know that cameras capability for high ISO

take some pics ., look at them and adjust accordingly

Not done party, but i guess it is similar to weddings at the part where everyone is dancing. I tend to shoot in manual, with flash to bounce of ceiling.

1/30th second, F/2.8, ISO 1000 to 3200, ETTL

The flash freezes the subject rather than the shutter speed and the longer shutter speed lets more ambient light in so it's not just a dark room with bright subject.

I thought if you use flash then you can use quicker shutter speeds.. and you can have ISO at like 100/200?

You can, if you want to black out the background, aka, dear in the headlights shots, what you see in every facebook page where pics taken by people who use Auto on their P&S.

I like having the background lit (which won't be by the flash), so I up the ISO.
