You are asked to help fix a mates PC. What freeware would you take?

On CD I Take...

Windows CDs
Bart PE
GParted
Acronis
Slax live CD

On USB Stick:

Ccleaner
Avast
Nalwarebytes
HiJackThis
Spybot S&D
CPU-Z
Everest Trial

^that's pretty much what I take

and the following...

Sata hard drive ~120gb
IDE hard drive ~ 80gb
1gb DDR1
1gb DDR2

(all new, easy to sell, mini upgrades)

and a 320gb external drive (for backing up their stuff if I need to)

I have a collection of various installs on CD and USB stick .. utilities, drivers etc.. Though the one I use the most is ccleaner... portable edition. Solves many problems :) Next down is PEbuilder for disk related problems, then UBCD..

i have most of the above, but i always run ccleaner then malwarebytes...

top tip... run ccleaner before anything as it deletes loads of crap so makes scanning times on av's and spywhere proggies go slightly quicker

Have my trusty memory stick with loads of software on it, main stuff would be:-

AVG
CCleaner
WinRAR
MalwareBytes
Hijack This
Acronis True Image
TweakUI - (XP)
Power Toys - (XP)
Latest Service Pack

Also tend to carry around with me:-
Open Office
Defraggler
IE8, Firefox, Chrome
Variety of useful apps like file unlockers, password recovery tools, IP scanners etc

A word of warning about some spyware: they block known executables so you need to rename the exec.

Some also block access to definition update services so if the vendor supplies a file that you can save then download and bring it with you too.

I built a pc for a friend but they keep textin me to go fix it, they say "it keeps getting viruses, its new it shouldnt be playing up like this". Im getting annoyed.

Last time i went round, all they had was an internet explorer pop up window of your "my computer" page and it said VIRUS VIRUS VIRUS everywhere on it. All i did was alt ctrl dele and closed it, as it didnt seem to wanna close via the X.

I ran spybot S&D and it found 78 problems  I removed, updated and imunized the system and went.

Just got a text saying the pc is playing up again, another virus, can i go round and fix it.

This is annoying, is there anything i can put on their system to stop pop ups like this? They are using Firefox which i thought was supposed to be better than IE with this type of thing!

I dont know how people do it, i built my own pc years ago and ive never had any pop ups like this, or viruses, and i go on a heck of a lot of different sites. All my friend goes on is facebook lol

I had this problem with a few users i do jobs for, i told them they would have to purchase two programs Avira AntiVir Premium and PrevX, i added MalwareBytes for on demand, showed them how to use and scan with the apps, job done.

Used to run a PC repair business until recently (no money can be worth the hassle sometimes!) and I actually refused to repair some clients machines due to their repeated virus issues after going on pr0n websites!

I used to do full images of the clients main drive before and after repairs but soon stopped that after you see the sorts of documents people store!

CCleaner
HiJackThis
Malwarebytes
SuperAntispyware
Combofix
Smitfrudfix
Norton Removal Tool
Spybot (rarely used)
Startup Control Panel (very simple exe that can view all startup entries)
WinSockXPFix
