Phall vs Vindaloo - much hotter?

I know a guy who works in a family run curry house in cambridge. We order phall sauce most times just to see if it was as bad as the last. The pain is indescribable. Last time the chef had to leave the kitchen the chilly fumes we so potent. He only knows one man who can actually eat one.

lol, where abouts in Cambs is this curry house? I might have to go and check it out with the gf - she loves spicy food. I never feel frisky or adventurous the next day though!

I've not had a Vindaloo in years.

It's just really pointless, as after a few mouthfuls, your tongue gets so irritated by the heat of the chillies, that you can't even taste any flavour anymore, it just becomes nothing but a burning hotness.

I also don't know if it's just me, I'm 27 now, but find that eating something hot is a lot worse on the way out that it was when I was younger!

this thread is full of lol. some of the posts are great!

i love a hot curry, but i usually only stick to madras now. its the dread in the morning the next day knowing what is coming to cause incredible amounts of burning and pain. i havent tried the old toilet roll in the freezer trick yet. anyone know if it works?

Yes, I had one, it took me like half an hour and 4 pints of lager to finish it.
It was tasty but it was like my mouth was red raw and someone was rubbing acid into it.

It wasn't as bad as this thing my mate bought me when we were up north for a weekend, called an afghan, i had one mouthful and I was in tears it was that painfully hot, I couldn't stomach a second mouthful.

Same here. Never seen one on the menu before...
Also where I go doesn't have vindaloo/madras/tikka masala

They're not always available in restaurants. They're generally considered 'too hot' though the chef will make one for you if you request it [and even then they may tone it down].

I find that most of the places that do have them on the menu tend to be the kind of cheaper Indian restaurants that cater to people out drinking etc... As they really are the only people who order the stuff.

Same as a few in this thread. Used to regularly do Phal's on a saturday night after the obligatory night out with the rugby lads. Have also heard guys ask for the hottest curry in the house and they got something called Tindaloo's at some places, though not sure if that actually is the same dish

Eventually gave up on it after a long conversation with the waiters one night, that all the heat in the curry spoilt the flavours that they were trying to get across, so in the end it was basically just a concentrated chilli and tomato sauce. Go for the more toned down heat now, such as Madras, Balti, Karahi etc

Tindaloo is one hotter than Vindaloo then it goes to Phall I believe?

After all this talk, I want to see what the deal is, so going for a phall tonight, wish me luck :)

Vodka Revolution used to do a chilli vodka years ago that was worse than any phaal I've had. I went to the bar to order it and the conversation went something like this:
me - "two chilli vodkas please"
barman "are you sure"
me "yeah, why?"
barman "just don't get any in your eyes and make sure you wash your hands before going to the toilet"

With trepidation I took them back to my co-drinker. Little fingers were dipped in by curious friends and drips placed on tongues to horrified, pained looks. Not wanting to back down, we downed them and legged it to the loos to wash out our mouths.

On our return to the bar, the barman was standing there laughing with two free glasses of milk ready.

They've toned them down a bit since then. Must be health and safety. Someone said it was tame so I tried it again. Nothing like it used to be...

No, I think if you took her up the "dirt track" the day after eating one of those you'd be in serious trouble ;)

I usually break out the Vindaloo whenever I get a cold but the last time I did I had a dry throat and mouth as well as the cold. Won't be repeating that again, every mouthful caused me great distress :o

Phall IS hotter than vindaloo.

I've tried both, I tried phall once... after one mouthful I drank three pints of milk to cool my mouth & throat !

I just pointed one of my workmates towards this thread as he used to work in an Indian restaurant. Apparently a bloke once came in with all his friends, giving it large about his curry eating abilities. A few bites into his Phaal and he was struggling. After about halfway, he staggered outside and collapsed on the pavement.

He was ok, but I imagine he was feeling a fair amount of discomfort.
