Living and working in Australia vs UK

in some states its legal to grow weed.

Not quite.

Possession of a certain number of plants (usually up to five) has been decriminalised in some places, but you will still be fined for it.

It's not as simple as "you can grow weed."

Positive: People are happier/friendlier

Negative: The trains are slower

I'd move to Sydney in a flash, bro lives in the Blue Mountains. Much better quality of life than London - even though its still a city.

Oh I see, your brother over here isn't good enough eh?

You mug.

If you went over to see him you would understand what I mean ;)

Chocolate fails in Oz though. They have Cadbury's over there but its not as good as ours. my friend asked me to bring over cadburys chocolate bars and creme eggs for her!

Yeah chocolate does suck here, beer isn't as bad as some have made out - there seems to be lots of micro breweries that do some ok beer. The distance gets to me sometimes though, Perth is just miles & miles from anywhere, but distance (the size of the state), it's resources and small population (~2.5 million) less than Wales! These are the things that bring it prosperity & quality of life.

I don't know if I'll stay here for good, I've got dual citizenship so I can come and go as I please... so i'll probably end up being a ping pong pom.

The chocolate thing is entirely subjective; I came to the UK and couldn't figure out why British-made Cadbury's was so bad! Not even as soft or creamy as Australian Cadbury's. Still think European stuff is superior.

Can't seem to get good icecream or proper coffee in the UK, either. But I can overlook these for all the other benefits. ;) :D

Ha - yeah I guess it is totally subjective, do you miss your tim tams? ;-)

So do you prefer living in the UK, or do you see yourself moving back to Australia?

Hell yeah! Tim Tams for the win! :p Oh, and Cherry Ripes of course. A few years ago I got one of my British workmates to bring one back for me! :o

So do you prefer living in the UK, or do you see yourself moving back to Australia?

It's swings and roundabouts, as I said before. In some ways I prefer the UK, but in most ways I prefer Australia. At the end of the day, home is where the heart is - and my heart is Down Under.

Do I see myself going back? Let me put it this way: got a permanent residence visa for my wife a month ago, and our tickets are booked for mid October.

The only thing that'd put me off going to Australia is the fact that every non-human life form wants to either kill you, eat you or kill you and eat you.

It's just all part of nature's rich tapestry!

People seem to be slating the beer but IMO even the mass market stuff tinnies are nicer than the equivalent in the UK. I can't stand drinking out of cans here, in Aus last year and I thought Tooheys New was bloody gorgeous.
I guess I'm just a beer philistine :)

I'm so disappointed with Australia with regards to the "hamfull creatures" I've seen absoloutely nothing!!! Not that I really want to... but still, you know you kind of expect to see something.

Is your wife British? What did you have to do to get Permanant Visa from the UK?

LOVE Tim Tams! :D

£6 a packet here in Tescos I have heard!

Don't they have some dodgy laws in Australia with someone being arrested for simpsons porn? That kind of thing would probably put me off.

It sucks we all need Visa's when you guys have our flag, our head of state and we built the place anyway ;)

Haha, we need visas to get into the UK too, you know! :p

Drive a few hundred clicks out bush, sit down and wait. I'll see you on News 24. ;)

Is your wife British?

Yep, she's an English lass.

What did you have to do to get Permanant Visa from the UK?

It was a spouse visa, so... proof of relationship and all the usual ID documentation. Cost me £700 and an awful lot of time for both of us spent filling in forms, checking details, taking statements from friends and family, writing statements of our own, collecting proof that we're a genuine couple, etc.

No laws; just one particular ruling by one particular judge in one particular case (details here). It sounds absurd, but OTOH there's plenty of hentai child porn out there, so where do you draw the line? Simpsons child porn OK; hentai child porn OK? Or... what, exactly?

All I know is that I don't want to be arrested when someone hotlinks it on a webpage I visit.

I've been moving around Australia for the last 7 months, basically following the sunshine!

Australia in some respects is so far behind Europe its untrue , but in other aspects its so far ahead of Europe its amazing. One good example is there attitiude to drunks in a pub , they don't throw them out and let police deal with them after they have got them drunk.
They "cut them off" and only serve them water so they can monitor them.

The other thing I like is the quirkly and personal touch to signs even in supermarkets , there mainly made up on word or something and it just males each shop individual unlike say tesco's where they get sent a sign form "headoffice"

Overall Oz is good but I certainly couldn't live here for the rest of my life
