The god delusion... Religious debate

Huh?

You mean you started your O-Levels/GCSEs found it a tad tough and caught religion?

Or he realized that atheism is basically as faith based as religion and became an agnostic.

But it's funny how you try and attack religious people as being dim when you hold basically the same beliefs :)

no, i have a degree in chemistry.when you learn what science really is, you start to understand what it can actually be used for and realise that atheists have no evidence

I do? I do?

iirc you've repeatedly stated you don't believe in a god and that you believe it's more likely we are the remnants of alien experiments.

As you completely missed the agnostic third option in dolphs post it means you're more than likely an atheist and so yes you have a totally faith based approach to it and so basically the same as religious people :)

Atheist.

I admire people with faith, and if that gets them through life then good on them. Everyone has right to a belief.

The irony of it being called faith seems to be lost on them though.

As far as I am concerned religion came about for one major reason, to control the masses. Secondly, the reason it still exists today is because the hunman mind cannot contemplate the fact that when you die, you are dead. Remember before you were born, well its like that.

You're an atheist you have faith in an unprovable assertion, do you admire yourself in the mirror? :)

The irony of you admiring people with faith while proclaiming your own (that you make an explicit declaration of disbelief or denial about the existence of god) is somewhat aumising.

People have managed to control the masses with and without religion...

I have faith in nothing.

Can you prove either that god does not exist, or that the assumptions of the scientific method are factually accurate?

If so, I'll be really impressed, given that no-one else has ever managed it.

Otherwise, on what do you base your disbelief or denial of the existence of God? (Simply lacking an active belief in God does not make you an atheist)

I work with a born again christian. He takes great pride (sin) in having a reputation in not trying to convert.

He actually is a really nice bloke. BUT. He gets stuck at one point when I put this accross. I say to him, as a Christian you are bound to certain rules, which of most of them are pretty much common sense but when I say "me as an athesit, I surely have a better moral compass than you, as I do not fear hell, I do good things because I am a good person, but he obviously does it out of fear.

I ask you, who is the better person. The man who realises we are worm food but does good deeds, or the man who thinks he wont get into heaven if he doesn't?

Where do I state that?

I think its far more likely that humans on this planet are the results of "Aliens". Be it a failed experiment or a Prison planet. Just seems far far more likely than some god like being. Unless by "god like" it simply means "more advanced".

What's interesting is that it is far FAR more likely that we are an experiment/left behind by beings most likely nearly identical to Humans. Than there is some uber mystical being that requires you to bow down in supplication facing the correct direction. Or cares if you go into a building with a pointy roof on Sundays.

there.

Reminds me of a quote that's something like "George Washington said he could not tell a lie, I can and choose not to, who's the better person"

:p

Don't get me wrong, I do not respect organised religion at all, but some people find there own way to religion, that I don't understand. Especially when I meet them they are generally have had bad backgrounds, Drink or drugs that kind of thing, and people that recover from a 12 step programee generally 'find God' because a part of that 12 step program is letting yourself go to a higher power, which I feel is an easy scapegoat. You are responisble for your own **** ups.

Whew! I was worried for a second that you were reading my mind as I didn't think I had posted that in this thread. That is one hell of a memory

The point remains, it does seem far more likely that we are just a long lost colony rather than some mystical being creating us in 6 - 7 days. Not that I think the planet is run by lizard men or anything :p

Religion is all about 'Faith' nothing else. You have to 'Believe' in god etc.

I am a Catholic and believe in god. I don't need any evidence to show god exists. I have my faith. To me, that is all that matters.

I am not saying anyone should think the way i do. Up to you what you believe.
