UK Government: Parents are essentially paedophiles

Just skim read it, so hang on, things like sleepovers might require the host parent to have a CRB check? absolutely beggars belief!

Surely you would know the person giving the lift before you say yes to them driving your daughter around?

In this case I don't think you do. Remember that if you want your kid's friend's parents to pick them up after school, that's an informal arrangement and not subject to this law. This law applies to organised activities, like football teams where you wouldn't necessarily know the person driving the kids back from training.

Yes, because having a CRB obviously means you are not a paedophile...Just means you have not been caught yet.

Jesus, if they made it easier to get into high tech crime units I'd gladly go find all the paedophiles.

This government and country are so stupid sometimes, its actually funny.

I guess my mate will now need another one? As he works in a boarding school with young kids? Even though he basicaly had a check not long ago?

I welcome a new government, jsut to see if someone can actually be better than labour...Or atleast a different prime minister.

First they came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up, because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me.

Off topic, but I love that quote.

As people have said this is a daft knee jerk reaction.

I work in education and red tape is causing vast problems. I have supervised students on trips and the level of paper work involved is stupid. When taking students to a museum I was given a copy of the risk assessment, it was 4 pages long (it even included the risk of students triping over between the bus and the front door). I don't even want to think about what would be required on an outdoor activety.

The place where this is going to hit hardest is primary schools where the supervision level on school trips has to be very high. The only way a school can get enough people is if parents come along.

However if all of these parents (who might only come on one trip) have to be CRBed it will be vastly increase the cost of running school trips and will probably lead to less of them.

There is another problem, CRBs can take 6 weeks to process. So if a parent drops the school can't ask someone else on short notice (unless they can find someone who's CRBed). I can see this leading to trips being canncelled.

If the government really think this is nessesary it needs to work in an unobtrusive way. And that should mean schools and public bodies should not be charged for CRB checks and the turn around time should be reduced to 1 week for a straightforward case.

Out of interest, of the people attacking this idea, how many have children?

M

I have children, its a brain dead idea.

I also have a step son that lives with me, do I have to have a check I'm not a fiddler to satisfy his biological father so he doesnt lodge a legal challenge to his mothers custody rights when we got married?

See the stupidity of the idea?

We were talking about this last night, There are times when the old "if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear" is quite relevant, however this isn't one of them. You cant go down this road without considering the consequences and they are very big.

The next generation of children are going to grow up thinking every adult wants to either kill them, rape them or kill them and rape them. You cant say (as some idiot on the news did) "it has to be done because everyone is a potential murderer" No we aren't ffs. All this is going to do is further alienate an already detached and suspicious generation.

On top of all that it wont do anything to prevent another Soham if its a first time offence. You could CRB someone tomorrow and they would be as clean as a whistle and then next day their driving down to school with an empty boot ( I think you get my point).

Sadly as most things are these days, I think the motive is money making, £60 a pop a CRB test costs and each body requires a different one to be done. There was a football coach on Sky last night that had, had to have 6 done to satisfy the FA, the local council, The school etc etc etc

When s the election again ?

if it prevents 1 Ian Huntley getting through the system it will be worth it.

Please explain how a CRB check would have prevented Ian Huntley murdering children ? Even if he had not held the position of school caretaker there was nothing to stop him living with Maxine Carr who was a teaching assistant at the school. He could still have come into contact with minors because of his relationship with her and could still have committed the crime.

If the government speed the CRB process up I think that this is a good idea - if it prevents 1 Ian Huntley getting through the system it will be worth it.....and of course, if you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to worry about

Well done for epitomising the idiocy behind this sort of thing. That really is superlative.

More crappy labour law. It's just like the fact that the rules on tax have doubled since they come into power, literally the book with them all in has more than doubled in number of pages.

Hold on a second, if I have a daughter who plays for a girls football team and gets a lift home from one of the other parents - isn't it a good thing that the person she gets a lift home from has been checked out a bit?

Maybe you should be driving your girl home? People want these checks but don't want or can't be with their kids 24 hours a day. The only place these checks are needed is in schools, both parents out working as little billy gets buggered is no different to little billys parents being blind drunk as it happens.

Surely these people are already vetted anyway and just being used to help the media sensationalism

I did a summer job at uni for supporting a school computer network and yes you are checked out in advance.

I can understand the security at schools, that's fine, but it's just the fact that if you have kids you're immediately labels as a possible paedo which is what this is implying. You'd never let your kids catch lifts with people you don't know anyway!
