Evening all!

Rather randomly had a mate pop round tonight for a cuppa, he used to be into 4x4's (offroading in Defenders etc) and sold his a couple of weeks back.

He's been saying he wants a "cheap" runaround for 12 months or so whilst he saves up for something, but wants a car to run around in for the meantime.

I (rather jokingly) said 'buy my car if you want' and he said he'd give me £1300 if he could pick it up next week!

I'm not sure if he's been looking into the value of these cars, but i was always under the impression i'd be lucky to fetch any more than £1k for it?!

I'm undecided as to whether (if he's serious) sell it to him and have a couple of hundred extra quid for it, or to keep it, run it for another year or so and hope i can get £1k or so for it when i come to sell/px it for a newer car!

I really do enjoy the car, i don't really *need* to sell it and theres nothing wrong with it at all, apart from the dreaded paint beginning to bubble more and more on the rear arches (under the paint at the moment, but won't be long before its through!!)

Opinions?

:)

P.S. - It's a Ford Mondeo ST24 on a W plate with 112K on the clock :)

I've told him he can buy equally as nice cars for the same money, i've even shown him nicer examples than mine :)

In that case yep, sorry, thought you were asking for reassurance to dupe him :p

Maybe he just wants something where he knew how the owner treated it as a clue to its reliability. If your ready to buy the mondy I would :)

If you didnt think you would get more than 1k for it and he is indeed a mate , Let him have it for 1k as you would have been happy with that and he has the £300 to sort the arches out (if thats enough I dont know)

It's about £100ish to have an arch done.

It's got to be tax'd at the end of the month and he would want me to put 6 months on it, so effectively he'd be having it for £1200.

What would you buy to replace it Phil?

Another £1k car or something a bit more expensive/newer?

Would it be worth the risk purchasing another car which could cause you problems?

Doesn't ANY new car that you purchase pose a risk factor? I don't know of many cars that you can purchase where you can gurantee nothing goes wrong!

I'll be looking to spend upto £4k-£5k, on the list at the moment are..

- MG ZT
- Mondeo ST220
- Octavia VRs

The Mondeo is the most expensive out of the lot, the MG ZT's seem to be showing great VFM at the moment, 5/6/7 year old examples with <70k on the clock are sub £3k now, it would have to be a pre-facelift though as i prefer the look of them!

Sorry, I meant that if you were going to get another car around what you'd get from selling the Mondeo, that could be a potential moneypit... moreso than a newer car.

All of those seem like sound choices. What engine would you be after in the ZT?

ZT 190+, does anybody know the difference engine parts/tuning wise to make the 160 and 190 different?

A quick Google brough up this snippet of information...

Now the differences between the 160 and the 190 spec engines are perhaps not as wide as may at first appear to be the case. Induction and exhaust differences are present to cap the higher rev power production of the 160, remembering the 190 has a modded inlet cam with 4 degrees extra duration. In reality I suspect the 160 will be making a little more than 160 whilst the 190 probably won't be making more than is claimed for it.

Maybe a slightly different ECU map aswell.

From reading the torque figures aren't all that different, and a couple of owners on some forum (can't remember which) opted for the 160 because the real-term difference is negligable!

Will have to go for a test-drive in one :)

MG ZT's aren't just a bargain atm, they've been a bargain for ages.

Just make sure you don't have feet over size 8 or you've no chance, tiny footwells!
