District 9 review...it's looking good... **SPOILERS**

I watched this last night. Unbelievably bad. This is the perfect example of a film relying too much on how it looks. The acting was dire and the story line looked like it might be going somewhere remotely interesting halfway through and then just fell flat on it's face. I'm actually amazed at the comments and reviews this film has received.

Some of the scenes were actually difficult to watch just because of the cringe factor. It's on a par with Starship Troopers, only at least that was very tongue in cheek whereas I get the feeling this wasn't made in the same way.

What on earth was with the dodgy irish accent swearing?

It was the worst Irish accent ever, bad film.

Overall good film, one I'd certainly watch again. Both myself and the mrs enjoyed it, which is a rarity, it's either one or the other.

The aliens looked amazing close up, the detail and shading was spot on. Acting was poor overall, particularly the main characters personality, before he stops and turns into mr badass at the click of your fingers.

I didn't get several bits of it either. Like, the battle scene at the end - where the hell was the other aliens when the main characters needed help? I love how the place was infested yet none showed their faces. Odd?

And, what about the tractor beam thingy that pulled the ship up? Why the hell didn't they use that to begin with, they could've saved themselves a lot of time. All it took was a bit of button pushing and the entire ship hovered over and pulled them up.

The chap sat a couple of seats down from me(on his own) didn't help either. He came in 5 minutes into the movie, immediately started eating sandwiches wrapped in tinfoil and made weird sound effects whenever something disgusting or funny happened.

They didn't have a leader to follow

Wikus had knocked Chris out and took charge of the ship

Not to mention that it's actually quicker to fly the ship up there and dock than it is to wait on the tractor beam. Had Wikus not been in the suit defending the ship it would have been hit by another rocket during it's ascent.

I found the acting to be refreshing, most hollywood stuff is stiff/rehashed/cloned, whatever you want to call it. This felt genuine to me, timid/shy at first until his promotion where power gave him a bit of a high horse to sit on and turned into a right ****, until faced with a life changing threat had to be on the run and finally snapped. At the end instead of being selfish like he always has, he helped chris for the better good.

Also, if you were these aliens, would you take a chance fighting against a small army with guns with nothing but your fists (tentacles) and blunt instruments? No, you wouldn't, the only reason they did it at the end is because he was outnumbered and they can take small arms fire better than us humans can.

Tractor beam? I assume the ship needed power first to run it's systems to power comms and it being quicker to fly to begin with so, naturally you'd pick the best plan first.

Use your brain.

What's unbelievably bad is someone who claims to have read some of the comments on this post not understanding that the movie is set in South Africa and the irish accent was actually South African and it was a South African actor.

It's sometimes hard to watch something when it's not blatantly British or American, it doesn't make it bad especially if you don't understand the background of the country and what the movie is not so subtly trying to say

Even better, the guy isnt an actor, and all his lines were ad libbed.

So when you take into account, he isnt a proffesional actor, he didnt have a script, and he is riffing off thin air, its an amazing performance really.

Agree with everything!! Just watched it last night and it was a amazing movie! Great natural acting, fantastic effects and quite a deep underlining story about how we treat things that are somewhat different to our own skin and culture! ...cant stop saying '****' now though :p

He ad libbed all of his lines in the "documentary" sequences. He didn't ad lib the entire movie.

I saw District 9 last week and yes, in all respects, it is an astonishing film!

Also, the fact that this is Neil Blomkamp's feature film debut makes it even more special :)

Highly recommended!
