My mate just bought a MAC

If I was going to be doing a lot of photoshop work and wasn't looking for a laptop I would probably still go for a PC over a Mac. Allows a lot more flexibility in drive and hardware set up to get the most out of photoshop inn terms of scratch drives and fast hardware.

I'm very ill informed, I don't use photoshop so naturally assumed but it's all down to preference yet people still feel the need to argue which is better. :p

I'd use a pc anyways as I can't use the Mac os at all... I'm just too used to a windows os.

Maybe untill WoTLK came out. Try to run it on a x3100 now and you are in for a bad experiance.

Ive run it on an E7300 with 4gb ram and an onboard chipset x3100 and it barely even runs at 15fps in lowest settings at 1280x1024 resolution. WoTLK uses the new shaders and it shows. Even when i tried it on a core 2 duo 2.2ghz laptop with the x4500HD it ran like a total dog even on lowest settings.

Cant say about mac as i dont know anyone with one :)

You probably have, but make sure shadows are disabled (though since you said lowest, you probably have already done this).

Yes with ALL setting at lowest... it runs like a one legged dog :p

I remember once running old wow on a x3100 and it did run ok, WoTLK however is another story.

MACS are great for video editing, and all that jazz.

Its the basis on which he bought it that makes him a moron.

They were once great, they no longer are great competition wise ever since ATI and nVidia added AVIVO and CUDA support because now video encoding is done way faster on PC using the power of the GPU so this argument is no longer valid and Mac machines are nothing more than expensive alternatives for no other reason than being stylish and different.

Heck Photo editing is just as fast or faster on PC, there is a photoshop speed thread in the photo section of the forum and my PC along with other folks beat quad core Mac powerhouses....

Consumer choice. There'a nothing wrong with someone who buys a mac to play WoW. But from the sounds of it your friend wasn't really clued up on his alternative options.

I never used to be a mac fan. But splashed out on a aluminum macbook 13' last year, love it. I really only use it for the typical multimedia stuff. Some gaming when needed. I'll admit I paid a lot of money for it.

But as has already been stated, the only person who can judge if the purchase was worth it was the person who parted with the money. If he's happy, u should be too.. Well at least try to be;)

I'd take a W7, high spec, cheaper PC over any flavour of Mac, if you want to fritter away disposable income to look cool, buy a decent car to replace the Citroen 2CV you plebs are obviously driving.

There is GPU acceleration on Macs too...

...and there's also something to the fact that some people do just prefer Mac OS.

I've spent a lot of time on both, I was a staunch Windows fan, loving every bit of the OS, but for my work I had to use OSX. Over time I did learn to like OSX and I found the design of both the OS and the unit itself more aesthetically pleasing.

Now I have an aluminium Macbook, and I've very happy with it. Do I still like and use Windows ? Yes. Do I find Macs more pleasing to use ? Yes. Does either one vastly outweigh the other ? No, they both have their ups and downs, strengths and weaknesses. For some people it's a personal thing. For others it's fanboyism. I have Bootcamp and I'm happy to have the availability to use Vista when I want to. Being constrained to a single OS, I find, is a tad stifling, personally.

Yes there is but that's besides the point I was trying to make...that the Mac system costs considerably more whilst never giving and equally amount more in product/performance.

At work I use a 16core PowerMac and while its nice it's not Wow nice since I'm also a Windows 7 user at home. If I were on XP or Vista then maybe I'd be swayed more but not so...in fact the 16core Mac sits running Vista most days now anyway.

Fanbois will always exsist, be it Mac fanbois, PC fanbois, PS3 fanbois, 360 fanbois... whatever!

The real idiots are the people who bite and call someone a fanboi because they dont like what they say...

Grow up people, who cares if he bought a Mac to play wow, its his money, his choice.

PC for Games and Ubuntu for everything else. Apple and their products have no place in society. Just trendy lumps of plastic for the Starbucks coffee drinking waste of space opinionated bloggers.
