They are overpriced at around 50% (which is the HE discount we get where I work, and where I get to decide in /re to the hardware purchasing). For the same price as the workstation mac we bought recently, we could've outfitted most of the team in only slightly lower end PCs. That's not even factoring into it the costs for extra software and support, or the extra 'hidden costs' due to reduced productivity down to making all the PCs and Macs play nicely with each other.

Perhaps in an all-Mac environment it would be different...

Ah, there are definite reasons to go for a mactop - my posts were probably a bit confusing due to also posting about laptops...but in my most recent comment about the pricing I was mostly referring to desktops :)

Oh I agree then. I thought you were talking about the laptops with the 50% thing. I would never ever buy a mac desktop.

A certain computer manufacturer that has a hELL of an outlet do offers like that regularly for made to order laptops that where then cancelled, have to be there to snap up the Deals though.

Admittedly, I got the HE discount so it was just over a grand. Not any Windows laptops I found with equiv. spec and that price. (Even forgetting that the Mac is actually a much nicer product in terms of build quality, looks, etc than a Windows laptop)*




*I don't consider Acer, or any of the purple shirt brands when making comparisons, as having had friends and my sister own an Acer, they are truly terrible pieces of rubbish and cut corners ridiculously badly WRT build quality to maintain spec.
 
People are overlooking the operating system.

Remember hardware can't run without software. I'd rather pay a little more for an excellent operating system.

Let's not get distracted by calling each other fanboys.

I've stated my reasons for not approving of mac purchases in general, but conceded that if you want a small/portable laptop then a macbook can be a good choice. Can't say fairer than that really.

Indeed. As I have stated before I think that there is a place for both OSes.

A quick round up as I see it:

Mac:
+aesthetics
+reliability
+security (not as in it's more secure, but that it has less attacks)

Windows:
+compatibility
+games
+programs

I use and like both, though :p
 
Aesthetics, PCs are up there with MACs now, although this solely is down to the buyer choosing a system with a aluminium shell of course and likewise similar peripherals.

PCs are as reliable as any Mac machine today, the only time they won't be is if a hardware fails (hdd etc) but that affects Macs too or if a User installs wrong drives/bad drivers or bad software. Not an issue on a Mac because it's quite locked down (Freedom of choice???!!! FIGHT THE POWER!!!)

Security attacks may be common but they're almost always met with strong defences on modern computers behind a router and software shields (AV, UAC etc) so this area of argument isn't really as valid as it once was.

Fair enough, I can't fault that. :) I will add another + for Mac, though.

Can run OSX and Windows 100% legally.
