First 5870 pricing in the wild - 320 euro

I really think it is so strange though that amd are holding reviews back until release date, I mean (if the leaked benchmarks are accurate) then the 5870 is a lethal performer and they should be hyping it up before release.

I think the theory goes that they don't want people to stop buying cards up to that point, as they still need to clear inventory of old stock (which I suppose they've done successfully given the distinct lack of available 4870 X2's).

yes that makes sense I suppose, I am also eager to see the 5*** equivalent to the 4670. I wonder how much power they can get from a passive card that requires no pcie connector

You can read the reviews at midnight and order in the morning :)

I'm pretty sure the reviews will be up @ 12.01am.

lol good plan but unless they are v cheap on release I will wait until I see how nvidia performs. I am just gagging to sit down and read a whole bunch of reviews

man 280 for the 5870 1gig version, i was expecting the 2gig version to be around 300 but not the 1gig version if those prices are legit then i can see the 2gig version being around 340

More than I liked but the kind of pricing i was expecting. People who thought the new cards would be 200 or less were having a laugh.

Yeah, but to be fair at the time those sorts of estimates were made, nobody expected it'd be a 330mm^2, 10.5" dealy with support for more monitors simultaneously than most people will own in the same decade. I think that if GT300 were on time the pricing would be a little more erm, consumer friendly, though.

They weren't having a laugh, it was based on ATi's past claims.

They've obviously not kept their 'promise' if they do indeed turn out to be these prices.

Performance doesn't dictate the price after all.

i was soo hoping the 5870 would be a bit cheaper
anyone know about the 5850's performance/price compared to the probabely similarly priced 4890

Personaly I think that price is perfectly justifiable if the performance is as shown so far, it's the most powerful single GPU on the market by a LONG way and as fast or maybe just a touch slower than the 295 and CHEAPER.

It's a brand new GPU and the first to provide support for a new DX, I mean charging much less would have been insane.

Which is all well and good from our perspective, with us being enthusiasts.

We're naturally more inclined to cough up more money for hardware as we're more interested in it.

We're the minority in that thinking pattern though.

As I've said a load of times, the profit they make on a per case basis is completely irrelevant. If they priced them at £400, I'm sure that they would sell SOME, and they'd make far more profit per card, but that's not what makes them profit.

Shifting cards in high-volume makes them profit.

I kept banging on about the fact that none of this would be related to 'past promises' and it was simply down to the price elasticity of demand and considering competitive product positioning, but you weren't listening :)

I guess we'll see really, this could all be rubbish, but I would personally expect it to come in around this price.
