First 5870 pricing in the wild - 320 euro

whats happened to the last 2 weeks then, like oh yer i,m gettting 1 of these when they come out and omg i,m having 2?you really didn,t think they be giving them away did you,you want the latest gpu you want dx11 then i,m afarid you have to pay the price,if not stick with what you have.

i just recently got into upgrading etc, didn't know ATI were bringing out a new card so soon, so i baught the latest 4890 version >.<

i guess its alrite as it does not let down in games.

Slightly off tangent - I guess AMD will manage stock levels such that 48x0 card supply will dry up before 58x0 is launched (so no big price drop on the former).

But can we assume that with no direct competitor, nVidia will have to slash prices on GTX260/275/285 to stay competitive? How much do we reckon they'll go for?

I'd quite like to pick up a quick card on the right side of £100 :p:D

Cheers,

Su

Which is all well and good from our perspective, with us being enthusiasts.

We're naturally more inclined to cough up more money for hardware as we're more interested in it.

We're the minority in that thinking pattern though.

As I've said a load of times, the profit they make on a per case basis is completely irrelevant. If they priced them at £400, I'm sure that they would sell SOME, and they'd make far more profit per card, but that's not what makes them profit.

Shifting cards in high-volume makes them profit.

Too add to your point, although they will make a higher profit per unit when considering manufacturing costs with, they still need to shift enough units to cover the R&D cost. So in actual fact, if they priced too high, they could take a net loss, not a lesser profit. At thatprice though, I'm sure a lot of people will pay.

Pigs will fly frist & dont worry the fanbois will keep buying nVidia cards & say there better :D

Well the GTX260 has been on special at £105 before? So I don't think a £5 drop is beyond the realms of possibility...

[edit] In fact they are already sub £100, so its only a matter of time before OcUK and others follow suit!

:o

i dnt knw, ppl are paying £1000 for Mars bar :D, and cant pay £300 for a 5870 :D ,dnt forget gtx280 price whn it wz first launch, so ATI prices r farly less thn Nvidias, u guys r paying £300+ for gtx295 but cant pay a bit less to beat it

So it looks like the rumours of the higher $399 MSRP were actually correct (~€269 ex VAT).

The problem is, that if correct, the sources would place the 5850 in the 200-230 range. However, the recent price drops by OCuk have put the GTX285 in that price range too. Although the 5870 will have no competition, the 5850 may have a run for it's money if it's performance is close to that of a GTX285, as it's projected price is actually more than the aforementioned 285. Cat fight!
