New build / upgrade for gaming and photoshop

Cheers all. Really appreciate all your help with this.

How's this look then?

An extra £22 on the graphics card gives me a slightly higher MHZ and a three year warranty. I assume the stock cooler will be ok as well?

Assuming I'm keeping the rest of the kit I'll be looking to shift:

Processor: Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66GHZ
Memory: OCZ 2GB PC2-8500 1066MHZ
Cooler: Zalman CNPS8700 LED 110mm (although caked in dust at the moment)
Graphics Card: 320MB BFG 8800GTS 580MHZ

Any ideas on suggested prices I'd be looking to sell these at?

Cheers.

Hi. Back again. Still not made the jump! :p Finances had to be diverted recently to other priorities.

Now looking at an i5 setup. Will obviously need to ditch the motherboard. Going to keep the power supply and hddisks (assuming the Power Supply will be up to the job).

How's the following look:

Would you change it at all? Was hoping for 8GB but there don't seem to be any sets around in DDR3.

Budget can stretch to £600 if required. Wondering about SSD drives for the OS, I guess that would be stretching too much.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I will buy this month!!

Cheers.

The ram youve chosen is Tri channel and the i5 range supports dual channel not tri channel, Also the i5 range needs specific ram voltages so this will be ideal.

Thanks for that. :)

Best bang for buck? Or worth stretching something nearer the £600 budget or would that be wasting money for minimal gain?

I presume my current 520W Power supply will be up to the task?

Cheers.

The above looks excellent, have a read of the discussions in gfx card section, they are going to be more, theyre brand new, but the feeling is they may push the prices of other things down a bit

looks good, I have the same gfx card and know its a beast! not to loud either. But I would hold out another week and see if the 5850's are in your budget and go from there.

Just wondering about the motherboards. The one I have chosen seems to be the cheapest I5 board, yet there are boards up to double the price. Should I be going for the cheapest? Not sure whether I should be spending a bit more. Not after SLI, but will this board create any bottlenecks?

I wouldn't rush in till I had seen some proper reviews of the boards. I mean Custom PC mag just did a AM3 / i7 roundup so I have some clue what i7 boards are decent now (mainly MSI as I recall). Early adopter beware, etc.!!

The i5 boards are a bottleneck for SLI/ Crossfire due to the splitting of the PCIe2.0 lane from 16x to two 8x lanes. That is a given from the early benchmarks... They give very respectable (> core 2 performance) for single card systems.

It will only be a single card system. The only gaming I'll be doing is ARMA II the rest will be Photoshop work etc. I appreciate what you're saying re: early adopter etc, but being an impatient bugger I'd like to get ordering very soon. Been arsing around with this new build for ages! :p

Do you think this MSI board would be a better bet then? Based on what you've said above?

Cheers.

Just another thought. I may end up not playing ARMA II much on the PC if Flashpoint 2 turns out to be good on the 360. I presume then I may as well keep my current one which I guess will be adequate for photoshop use? I've read CS4 does take advantage of the GPU to some degree. (current card: 320MB BFG 8800GTS 580MHZ).
