Hi all,

Friend of mine currently has 2 9800gtx+ gfx cards running in sli and is thinking of upgrading.

Which SINGLE card is the cheapest that will out perform them.

Thanks all

Really, I would not have expected that high a card. Remeber I am looking for the cheapest option from Nvidia that will out perform them, not neccesarily the card that is best value etc

Yeah, the GTX285 is the only card that could really be considered an upgrade from two 9800+ in SLI. The performance improvement would be relatively small even with this upgrade (between 0 and 30% performance bump in most cases). The 9800+ SLI setup isn't exactly slow.

He would see a much bigger improvement going for one of the new ATI cards which are coming out next week. Is there any particular reason why it has to be an nvidia card? Nvidia aren't exactly in their finest hour right now.

The main reasons for wanting to go Nvidia are Brand loyalty, 3d vision and Phyixs.

He is really into the 3d vision at the mo and is wanting to get that up and running in the near future

tri sli 9800gtx gets the same score as a single gtx 280 in most apps

if you get a single 285 then you will see a bit of an improvement and save some power too!

another alternative is to wait for the 5870 which would give you dx11 access

look what he wont get tho 3d vision pysics cuda or go 295 if u can afford too!

ati fanboys will now come rushing in, dont give in to the 5870 unless you see real proof and benchmarks.

The 250 is just a rebranded 8800gtx so 275/285 sounds right and the best value and 285 rarely feature go together.

wait for the 5800's atleast if nothing else should knock a few quid off the 285/295

Checked a few benchmarks because I had no idea and from what I saw the 285 is better but only just, you will however lose the SLI set up and any possible issues that can arise with them and also lessen the power requirement and heat output.

If you really wan to stick with Nvidia and want gains the 295 is pretty much it, or possible switching to a 260/275 SLI set up.

There is no single card that is faster than that combination in SLI, except when SLI isn't supported in a game. The only cards that would show a noticeable performance boost are the 295GTX and 4870X2.

3d vision, maybe. Psychics, ATI are getting it soon. Cuda? Omg!
Tbh i could repeat your last sentence but reversed to you with nvidia.

Only an idiot would actually buy a gtx295 right now.
