Bangkok - seeks survival guide

So you were a sex tourist? I saw a program about that on TV recently, not sure I could pay for sex TBH, but each to their own ;)

No.

My girlfriend worked at a trendy restaurant as a waitress. And I never once paid for sex. But I did hang out around Nana, the main sex tourist area, a lot (great for bars/pool/food and fun etc, not just sex!).

Sorry, I clearly misunderstood. 'Girlfriend' can be a polite way of saying other things.

What has happened to your girlfriend now? She is still there? You'll go back or?

Well sometimes it is used that way. The term boyfriend/girlfriend is used very lightly around Nana.

She's off to Sweden next month to spend a year as a 'nanny' for her older sister who is currently pregnant and living there. So I'll be going over there for a month or so soon. After that, who knows.... :D

I was in Bangkok for 3 days on the way back from New Zealand. Had never been so booked it for chill out time before coming home.

- Even if you get a cab from the airport where they are supposed to put the meter on make sure to force them to. I had to do this upon arrival - he tried negotiating without putting the meter on and then started moving. I had to open the door before he got the picture that I was serious.

- For about £80 you can get your own tour out of the city. I had my own guide and car that took me to the floating markets, River Kwai, tiger temple, elephant riding, etc. Booked with http://tourwithtong.com/index.htm who are well known on the tripadvisor forums.

- If you want a suite Bangkok is the place to do it. I got a 4 room suite with jacuzzi for about £100 a night (I think) and I could have got something much cheaper but as I said - was my chill out time! Treated myself!

- Get a cab out to the crocodile farm on the outskirts - fantastic zoo. Feed all the animals, get close, etc.

- Read up on scams before you go so you know all about them.

Great for you, visiting your Thai girl in Sweden and all, but I can't help thinking you're missing out. Swedish chicks are hot.

Good guide! I came back a month ago and I'm in the post trip blues stage.

Kaosang road = hated it. Didn't know about Soi4 before I went, stumbled across it while looking for a beer.

We never got fleeced for a Taxi. Tuk Tuks are fun for a quick go, but ultimately dangerous. We also spent some time in Hua Hin, and the Tuk Tuks outnumbered the Taxi's about 10 to 1 and were of better quality.

Khao San road isn't the best place but it's unique and 'exciting' at first so everyone should go at least once.

I've still never had a bad experience in Tuk Tuk. I stayed in Chiang Mai for almost 3 months and never used a taxi once, only Tuk Tuks. Even when I told one he needed to take me to the train station very fast and he got me there in 8 minutes, it never felt dangerous!

The only time I found Khaosan to be even vaguely interesting was during the Queens birthday celebrations. Bangkok was awesome that night. The whole city was one giant party. :D

Shame I missed that. Was in Hua Hin at the time. The hotel did a thing with free food which wasn't so bad.

One thing that stands out for me about my time in bangkok was wandering down patpong road thinking it was just a market, glancing through one of the bar doors I saw what I can only describe as 20 pre-pubescent girls dancing badly in identical red bikinis. I continued looking through more doors as I walked down to realise i'd stumbled into one of the seediest areas of bangkok...i promptly left. I'm not prudish but seeing what looks like underage girls dancing around just doesn't do it for me.

The rest of bangkok was pretty awesome though.

I very much doubt they were underage. The absolute vast majority of working girls (be it bar-girls/gogo's/coyotes or prostitutes etc) are in their twenties.

Underage working girls are practically unheard of in Bangkok.

Absolutely. Thai women look several years younger than they are and if they're around the 155cm mark they can look very young. There's no way there'd be a stage full of underage girls in a tourist area.

The government had done a good job of cracking down on bars and clubs where underage girls work, but it still goes on unfortunately, just not in big name bars in places like nana, patpong, cowboy etc.

The only place I saw any evidence of it was on my trip to Pattaya. Me and my girlfriend were sitting in a bar called something like 'Pattaya Beer Garden' near walking street, and a man in his late 30's/early 40's came and sat on the next table escorted by a girl who looked around 15. It was very obvious that she was his bar-fine, and not a relative or anything like that.

I have no doubt the girls I saw were of legal age, however it left a bad taste in my mouth. I am well aware that thai girls look younger than their age, but anyone who wants to have sex or even a relationship with a girl that looks younger than legal age clearly has mental issues, regardless of her actual age.

That said the majorty of thai women I saw who looked 18/19 are fair game ;)
