Noise - how much does it matter to you?

I am running a Polow 1.9 Derv with a Powerflow exhaust. :D
Even at my age I still stop to listen to a Decent motor booting & purposely get in the right gear for a window open moment through a tunnel or under a bridge, I can't help myself & if somebody passes me whilst I am walking & doesn't boot it I say out loud "*****". :p
I will never grow up I just think I am stuck at 14 years old. :D

Loud exhausts on standard engines make me want to cry. This is usually the case, like 99% of the time. Loud exhausts on modified engines with loads of induction roar make me want to cry with joy, but I rarely hear this unless it's my own car.

i like a car to be as near to silent as can be, maybe a bit of noise at the very top end to remind you the autobox is about to change.

Same as snowdog really, don't want to hear anything when cruising, but it ought to sound good when booting it. One of the reasons I got rid of the Volvo is it had an annoying drone when cruising at around 70 which made long journeys very tiring. Can't fault the old 5-pot at 6500rpm though :).

If we're talking about a daily drive. It should be quiet unless you're revving it hard, otherwise it's tiresome and you look like a *****. When you see an Aston in town you can barely hear the thing but when they accelerate it's ridiculous. That's how it should be. Even the Mini I drive is silent but sounds fairly raspy when rev'd hard.

I'll agree with the bloke that said it's different if the car is a weekend 'toy.'

I'm sorry but that just looks ridiculous. You don't expect a sound like that from a S2000. Ever!

Spoon N1's are ridiculous. I went to an Integra meet once and was behind a guy who had an N1, the first time he floored it I genuinely looked up in the sky because I thought a jet was passing over.

Sounds like a friggin afterburner.

Ironically, my truck sounds much better at low revs than at high - it'll produce a resonating rumble that sets off car alarms as I pass.... :D

You should hear some of the dutch scania V8's coming out of Hull docks, baum-baum-baum-baum kinda bellowing noise that you can feel shaking right through your own cab as they pass you (usually they're doing a good 60mph too).

My last car depite all the tuning work only had a standard exhaust, but the noise coming from the induction side more than made up for it, in fact it probably turned more heads than the remus and home-brew exhaust on my current car does.

Engine noise is fairly irrelevant to me (my car choice should make that obvious!)

I appreciate a good engine noise but wouldnt let that bias a purchasing decision. To me, being quiet at speed is a much more important factor

Lots.

If a car doesn't sound good when pushing on, it doesn't give you that grin, which all petrolheads need.

My RS4 sounds very fruity but not pure, just like any modern Aston. You can tell they have tuned exhausts, my RS even has a button to open the baffle flaps to make it louder! I think an M3 CSL sounds epic from the inside, proper race car sound as does a GT3, though the 997 also has a more tuned set of pipes which takes away from the engine slightly in my book. Good engine sound please!

completely car dependent.

On my daily i couldn't care less. But on the rx7.... the sound is just awesome. If i could afford it as a daily the noise wouldn't be a problem, infact it would probably just make me happier, only the rattles are anoying. There's not a lot better than a turbo rotary with a screamer pipe and a huge turbo with no BOV imo

May sound unbelievable to some but i love the sound of mine when booting it. It sounds a lot bigger than it does and no it doesn't sound boy racer fart cannon :p but it does get too much when I'm just driving to and from work, i can't really hear any music. It's defiantly worth keeping it the way it is for me purely for the sound when booting it :D

+1

can just about hear the music lol :D

semi stripped with no centre silencers ***!

If it's not a V8, or some finely tuned race engine, I'm really not that interested in hearing it - unless it's something special.

I don't mind, however, the note of a decent straight six (naturally aspirated, mind).

So sick of hearing 'phat' four cylinders.....

Preferred personal notes of choice:

I love the noise my car makes, I paid a lot for the exhaust but it was worth it. When I'm cruising on the motorway or through town its a low hum which isn't droany at all and when I nail it it comes alive and gives me lots of smiles :D

As standard the Boxster actually has quite a nice sound to it, especially higher up the rev range but now that I've fitted a Remus exhaust it's perfect. At idle it's the same as standard, up to 2500rpm it's a bit lower and grumblier but not intrusive but above that it howls, exactly as I like it.

Most exhausts I've had in the past have been compromised in some way, they're either boomy or droney or simply OTT but the Remus on the Boxster is just right.

Its one of the reasons I own an Alfa. Nothing says "Good morning!" better than the aural delights of one of the all-time-great V6's :)

But I prefer induction over exhaust - majority of loud exhausts are just annoying.
