***Official Halo:ODST Thread***

Firefight mode is tempting me in... but I just don't know. I don't like the fact it is unwinnable. I liked Gears 2's horde mode because of the fact you were aiming to beat it. Firefight mode is more a points fest.

I am going to become addicted to this mode. I can tell. I had to get to the top of the OcUK survival Left 4 Dead leaderboards..

I'll have to beat this too!

Hopefully my copy will turn up today.

My guess would be time, since they only had just over a year to get it all done. But tbh I personally don't care that Firefight is invite only because I will only play with people I know anyway

They said that it would take a "massive recode" to include Firefight in matchmaking since its a form or co-op or something, which in Halo 3 was only doable with your friends and not through matchmaking.

Don't see how it would be too hard to incorporate it into matchmaking, and they sure as hell had enough time to do it since it was finished for almost a year.

its quite ridiulous tbh. the only new feature they have added and they havent bothered to do it properly. the greatest thing about horde was the fact that you could very quickly be part of a team with friends or total strangers.

But it hasn't been done for almost a year, it has been finsihed for 3-4 months. You could argue why didn't they use those extra months to carry on working on it, but the team only had a set amount of time of around 14 months after which they were to be moved back on to Halo Reach development.

Yes it would be nice to play randoms, but given the time frame they had Bungie just had to make it work with what they already had.

I'm not too bothered as I'll be doing it with people from here more than likely but the option would have been nice, seems like a bizarre omission.

I guess, but given its the same engine and same code they have used for years, then surely its not that difficult to use Firefight in matchmaking? Gears2 done it perfectly fine with Horde and its the same engine.

ODST is just a stand alone expansion built on the 3 year old Halo 3 engine, they didn't have time nor the resources (i.e. people) to start writing new code.

Since Firefight was never planned from the start for Halo 3 they had to use their existing systems. It wouldn't work with their current MP mode because it didn't have AI in MP, so it had to be the co-op mode, which in Halo 3 was just a lobby where you invited friends and chose your mission. Firefight works exactly the same, but instead of loading a mission it will load a map (missions are basically just maps with set pieces anyway).

It wasn't a question of difficulty or whether it was possible it was a timeframe problem. Also it was due to the fact that the engine is 3 years old and that this is the last time they would use it so there was no point in them creating a matchmaking system just for firefight, since Reach is using a new game engine and all the work creating new code would have gone to waste.

Really? I think ODST is one of the worst looking games I've seen recently. It looks horribly clunky, with all square rooms and poor lighting. The character models are quite basic and textures relatively poor.

The sound seems a bit dodgy as well with certain effects being extremely loud but other whisper quiet - it's the first game i've actually been worried my surround sound wasn't working properly in! :o

All the halo games since combat evolved seem to be expansion packs in my opinion - the thing that has kept it going is that the original concept was so strong. They really need to kick it onto the next level. Technically the engine is crap compared to all the Unreal powered games out there.

The alternate vision mode just doesn't work - the night time is far too dark, even with the brightness setting set to high / higher, meaning having to leave it in the alternate vision ALL THE TIME, just like Batman come to think of it...
