You can compare 'ring lap times a lot more fairly than TG lap time. Manufacturers send their cars around the track in the optimum conditions for the cars to perform. TG send their cars round in any old conditions and then just estimate the difference.

no comment on the 'ring then?
you dont KNOW it has different drivers, its possible but you dont KNOW it

Car companys have their own test drivers (Normally racing drivers) who do stuff like this for them. No way would a company let a driver test products for the competition.

I think it's an amazing little car... 30k amazing ?, maybe not, but I can understand the attraction.

and to Fox: I suppose you have 'grown out of' hot hatches long ago then ? ;) ...jebus, how young did you start driving. I'd suggest you have 'grown up' too fast in your 530, you should be out having fun in a hatch not gliding down motorways in 'easy mode'

I'm 38 and still love go faster wannabe racers, they may have stick on tat, but they go like stink and give big grins...

You missed my point - I didn't give an age at which one 'grows out' of hot hatches. But most people dont buy £30k cars at the age of 22, which is the age most people are really into hot hatchbacks :)

I guess buying a green or orange car with stick on bits aint so appealing as you get older...

I pointed out a white RS to missus other day and said 'like the look of that', she told me too grow up lol

Not sure I understand the whole association between the "Halfords stick on tat boy racer" look, and that of a £30k hot hatch which actually needs all that stuff stuck to it.

As for the Cayman vs RS argument. Yes a Cayman is cheaper and a better sports car, but it's also going to cost a LOT more to keep running to a good level, as a rough guess I'd give it 2-3 years before you've spent so much keeping your Porsche in tip-top condition that it would pass the price of a new RS.

Also, just because you've grown out of that type of car Fox, doesn't mean everybody should be like you. If someone was considering a different car instead of an RS I'd probably agree with you but here, I don't. The RS is a damn fine car with it's own merits against the Porsche, and IMO is worth the price tag.

Exactly. We'll leave me out of it because arguably I should own a Focus ST not a BMW 530i but I think its fair to say that by the time 99% of the RS's biggest fans can actually afford one they wont want one.

shauncr91 is a perfect example. He cannot understand what I am bleating about. How could he? He's 18. Of course he's going to adore the Focus RS.

Lets see if he still does when he's got £30k in the bank and fancies blowing it on a car ;)

I'm not drawing comparisons to me here, I should be buying hot hatches but even if I did I dont have the money for an FRS..

I don't adore the RS, and I probably wouldn't buy one either. It isn't to my taste and I'm in the same position as your here on where my money would go. What I am saying is I can understand someone choosing the RS over a Porsche and would never knock their decision in this case.

Edit: This thread needs less generalisations...

..come on Fox

but the porsche is 36 new for the standard cayman or 44 for a cayman s
were as the ford focus rs is 26k, how is the porsche cheaper at the start?

Indeed, I guess he should just buy a 10 year old 5 series with a million miles and be done with it.

Ironic how you love to take the **** when you actually went out and bought pretty much the same car as me a few years ago isn't it?

Which you still can't sell.

What I drive has no bearing on my opinions in this thread. It doesn't matter. And I've never bought and will never buy a 10 year old 5 Series. Nor do I drive one.

Maybe I am wrong and there are hundreds of thousands of people queuing up to buy a Focus RS. Oh wait. It's a very niche car for the reasons I've explained.

Saw a brand new RS on the hard shoulder of the M4 this afternoon being winched onto a flatbed. I'd be gutted if that was me.

Sarcasm detector failure.

I think the point is you don't get the point, the Focus RS is a very niche car, its a loud offensive hatchback, which is what Ford generally have specialised if you look over their history in the UK. The stick on tat is what makes the car.

Comparing it to a Cayman or whatever isn't exactly accurate as a Cayman is a civilised Sports car/coupe, the Focus RS is the hottest hatch that exists.

These cars exist to add choice, I am glad Ford made it, even if it doesn't sell well at least they made an effort, it never is cheap to sell a car that will only sell in a few numbers.

Have you actually driven one? I haven't, probabbly never will, but I certainly do understand where they're coming from.
