Fabia vRS

So, travelling to work on Friday morning....

Dropped into third gear and put foot down, jolt from the engine bay and a loss of power (not total). Immediate thoughts were I'd popped a hose somewhere around the turbo/intercooler. Nursed the car to the slip road but it was completely jammed so had to get to the next exit (0.5 miles).

Slight juddering from engine and an amazing amount of smoke from the rear forced me to pull in to a layby. Checked all pipes but no obvious leaks or looseness. Checked dipstick - empty!! (i check my oil regularly so I knew at this point what had happened).

Called AA who agreed with me and decided to tow without attempting any roadside fix. While hitching up to the van a nice young lady decided that looking at the AA van was more important than driving her 306 and promptly drove into the back of a 2 week old merc which was at the back of a traffic queue. Lots of tears, amublances and police statements later (2 hours) I was finally on my way to the local Skoda dealer who to be fair were brilliant. Gave me a courtesy car with no arguments and even put me on their insurance (so used to having to sort that out myself).

Had a call later in the day to confirm the turbo had blown. 3 months out of warranty. The guy asked me to bring my service record in to see if they could get Skoda UK to contribute - not holding out much hope but nice of him to offer that rather than me to have to ask.

Question is what else has gone wrong :p

Can you take this opportunity to put an aftermarket turbo on ? Not sure how diesels / the 1.9tdi engine respond to this sort of mod btw, nor what the cost difference would be :o

All standard :) Been planning on getting rid for some time so this will be the kick up the butt I needed.

3 months out of warranty - thats got to suck. I'd try and push for a parts/labour split - they give you the part if you pay the labour

VAG tdi's can take aftermarket turbos easy, a new set of injectors and a ko4 perhaps? Beastly turbo diesel power.

Unlucky though mate, 3 months out of warranty, strange.

Picked the car up this evening. New turbo, cleaned intercooler and front exhaust. Seems to be running very smooth indeed. Drove it home which is a 30 mile trip and it seemed as good as ever (although I was nursing it a little ). Total cost - £241. Big thumbs up to SUK and especially Sinclair Skoda of Swansea who made the whole experience as painless as possible.

 sounds like a bargain!
how much did skoda contribute?

Skoda dealers are good, I think it's because they aren't parts of big dealership groups and more mom and pop outfits, something the big boys could learn from.
