As title on a 1.8 2001 focus Mk1 collection.

Ive checked the prices of the parts and its approx 80-90quid. Does it really take 2 hours to change 2 discs and pads to bump it upto £180?

When i questioned the price i was told "needs time to get the old disc off as it can be a pain to remove, and we have to grease up the new and align and blah blah " now i know jack all about motors so i just need to know if this figure is roughly ballpark.

No, not at all.

edit - hang on, that's just for one axle? Wow, you can get a set of discs and pads for under £40, for a pro to fit them will take 30 mins max.

Ive been quoted that for genuine ford parts, he refuses to use "crap off ebay" in his own words.

Now the garage in question has a good rep and has always done good work for me in the past. This just sounds rather a lot for what im hearing is an easy job ( assuming you have the tools ).

As a side note is it worth getting drilled/grooved discs apart from the looks? looks im not fussed about but stopping quality i am.

Something like this ? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FOCUS-Drilled...s_SM?hash=item439a369434&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Its on the high side, I was quoted £300 to do all round on my Mondeo, thats brembo disks and ferodo pads - I'd want to see it on the nicer side of £150

No way does it need two hours labour to do one axle.

Around £80-90 for the kit, then £30-40 for the labour, bring the total to £110-£130

Right as i thought hes taking the biscuit then.

Ill go shopping round and see what i can get elsewhere.

I pay £20 per axle to fit discs and pads at two of my local indys.

I'd try a local store / ebay for discs and pads- they hardly need to be performance items for that model :)

Thanks guys. I think ill wander round a few local motor parts shops and buy a set myself and take em to somewhere for fitting. Any indy i goto is gonna mark up any bits they buy by a fair whack i imagine.

Any makes/brands i should go for or avoid? i think id like grooved and drilled discs as they do look better so how much should i pay for them and pads do you think? upto 80ish for good branded ones?. Its not like ive got an ST or anything so i dont need uber performance parts.

Just had the local Toyota garage ring up and tell me I need new pads as they are about 85% worn, been quoted £125 to get the changed, figured why not as it's in the middle of a 40,000 mile service anyway. Plus we have an account with them so it all ges through the company accounts.

Expensive.

Labour for that should be about £40 and should take a pro with ramps no more than an hour to do MAX.

If it takes more then 30 minutes, something is wrong, but the minimum labour charge *should* be just one hour. As this is aside from servicing I'd have an indy do it, or DIY.

Lots of discs stick to hubs - best way I have found is to cut a thin slot in the disc with a grinder then belt the slot with a chisel and lump hammer. The disc normally breaks in half and comes off easily.
