Hi there,

I own a V reg Fiesta 1.25 Zetec and there seems to be a problem when I accelerate.

When I hit 2-3000rpm there is a horrible noise, a loud sound almost like plastic is hitting something that is moving really quickly.

It happens I would say 1 out of every 3 times I drive the car. Any idea what it could be?

Also a while back when on the motorway doing 70mph my car overheated, the temp gauge went all the way to the end and only hot air came through the vents.

A bad smell almost like bad fish came after a while and I had to stop. It has not happend since but is there anything I could check? I have driven on motorways for short distances and its been fine but not for a long trip as of yet.

Thanks for any advice.

I know this sounds kinda basic, but just to cross these off the list:

Has it got enough oil?

Has it got enough water in the radiator?

I could try recording the noise, good idea.

Oil and everything has been checked, its been given a service by a mechanic and my Dad has checked everything too :)

Did you find anything when you checked it over after it overheated on the motorway? Was the coolant level ok? Was the water pump belt on and no noises coming from it?

Everything looked fine, it went to our mechanic the next day and he couldnt find nothing wrong. He also changed the temperature reader (sorry I'm not sure what it is).

Card in bicycle wheels kind of sound?

Once audible, does it vary with speed, revs or constant?

Does it do it when in neutral? Does it do it when moving only?

Yep thats it.

It comes with high revs, speed does not affect it although I dont hear it when I'm in 5th or 4th gear. It does not do it in neutral, only when im in gear/moving.

EDIT- No vibrations! :)

Maybe the radiator fan isn't working properly and is catching on something? It would explain the noise and the overheating. If its a electric fan [i.e. working only when the engine gets warm] it'd explain the intermittent nature of the noise, but not why it appears at certain RPM's....

The radiator fan shouldn't come on at all unless stopped with the engine on/stuck in traffic/slow speeds because at higher speeds you get enough air moving through it regardless, so I can't see how a problem with that would cause it to overheat doing 70, even if you were in second *winces*..

Surely it would come on if the rad was operating at a reduced capacity because it needed flushing? Just a thought

OK good point. Although I'm still not convinced the fan would then need to be malfunctioning for it to overheat - as the airflow through the rad at 70 would be far greater than the extra airflow generated by the fan coming on. :)

Cam Belt slapping against cam cover?

Take the cover off and go for a drive and see if the noise is there or not. Running without a cover is not a fix though.
