...Where to get it? Ive been quoted £2200~ for a 1.1 Saxo :eek:, but only £2060~ for a Modeo 2L Ghaia...

Im now looking at buying a family sized car for my first car!! They seem rather 'cheap' on insurance...

So, what do i need to do to get it lower than £2K fully comp?

ive been quoted £1800 fully comp for my gf's 1.2 clio (she gets it for 1100) but adding me as a named driver only cost an extra £99.99 for the year :S

doing fully comp quotes on golf's etc @ 100-140bhp can give me quotes of 2400-3200 fully comp with values of the cars ranging from 5k-9k

im 21. just passed no accidents or points etc.

Back when I was 17, most insurance would quote between 3k and £4k for my mum's 1.1 saxo, which was pretty shocking (the postcode didn't help at all for this).

I suggest you add an additional named driver, your mum or dad specifically. Try different combinations of:
Mum
Dad
Mum+Dad

Try a non-chav car. Insurance is based on risk, not engine size. If more Saxos are written off / stolen / damaged than Volvo S60s with an engine twice the size, the Volvo will have lower risk and this will be reflected in the premium.

erm no.. i have tried like 100 different cars and nothing comes cheaper.. and this thing about bigger engine, family cars etc etc is not real.. at least in my post code.. :/ if person with 4 years no claim bonus pay 700quid for 1.7 diesel car at this postcode.. i'd say i have no chance of insuring anything below 2k..

Cheap and car insurance do not go together at all.

Not unless your 50 years old with 55 years driving experience and 60 years no claims.

It makes little difference what your 1st car is, but the 2L Mondeo driving n00b is, apparently, statistically less likely to crash then the 1.1 Saxo driving n00b.

Second hand saloons are cheaper than second hand hatchbacks = win.

no tried bell, admiral, elephant etc etc

Try more specialist places like Adrian Flux

I'm 24 and my insurance is just over £300 - hardly extorionate.

It makes complet sense, when did you last see a 17 year old in a mondeo with m3 wing mirrors, driving like a plonk around macdonalds car park?

Try a Honda or Hyundai as they aren't typically young peoples cars. Also cars with 1.5L engines can be a lot cheaper to insure even compared to smaller engined cars (Honda CRX was nearly 1/2 the price of a 1.6 Saxo when I was getting quotes a while back).

I found Direct Line was good for young persons insurance (back when I was a young person!)

Friend at school had a 1.8 Mondeo, turned up to an English exam and found him parked in the back of a van in the school car park.

typically there are more "chav" (small first time driver) cars, saxos etc on the road so theres a good chance more are going to be stolen/damaged or written off..

different things ive tried and postcode tends to make quite a lot of difference in the price as does the Inurance Group of the car (obviously)

IG2 = £1800 fully comp, car value £2500
IG6 = £2300 fully comp, car value £5000
IG8 = £2600 fully comp, car value £5000-7000
IG10 = £3200 fully comp, car value £5000-9000 still the same quote

i also found out something interesting. an IG8 car made in 05 was cheaper than an IG8 car made in 02

something to think about, newer cars being less to insure. i assume due to safety or security.
