Hi guys - i know apple are quite tight lipped about upcoming changes to their product lines but i was wondering if there are strong rumours about an upcoming refresh to the imac product line. I'm keen to hear if form factor changes are expected and if blu ray burning is likely to be integrated in to the system any time soon.

Is it best to hold off from buying an imac just now?

Is there a particular time of year that apple tend to perform their refresh?

Cheers,
Dub

They could offer a BTO option on current Mac Pros, without changing the spec.

However, even if they did this they wouldn't introduce it for remaining lines until a "true" refresh, months later :)

Blu-Ray runs counter to Apple's Hi-Def offerings via Itunes, so they're unlikely to make it a priority.

If you can even call them "hi-def" with the bitrates they use ;)

I believe the bag of hurt comment Steve Jobs made has been sorted since the licensing is now all a lot simpler.

Not putting Blu-Ray on the Mac would be downright silly.

Apparently Apple have a media event scheduled for September 9th. You could at least wait till then to see if there is any talk of blu-ray.

rumours of the rumours suggest this event is concentrating on music, iTunes 9 etc. But you never know :>

i really hope that if they do put blu ray in new imacs that they release an external drive for other mac users coz there is no way am spending more money on a imac when i just got a top of the line model at the last refresh :(

What's to stop you using one of the external drives that is already available? I'm not being cheeky - it's a genuine questions.

Last thing I heard there's no software which will play them available for OSX - at least not consumer focused stuff.

EDIT: I could be wrong here - I haven't been keeping up with progress on this...

Ahh i thought you were talking about burning too rather than reading from.
