The Official Football Manager 2010 Thread

And interesting news on activation. If you buy the game on DVD you can either not activate it and have to play FM10 with the DVD in the drive (as I did from FM05-FM08) OR you can get FM10 on DVD, install it BUT activate through Steam (as with last year but this is optional this time round).

By activating the game on Steam you get a skin released exclusively on Steam as well as automatic patching/updating.

Oh good so if there are problems with the activation process like last year we can just ignore that for the first week or so, any news on a demo?

**** You.

I now regret paying £29.99 for it! I had no idea about registering it with steam.

Yep. That's what I understand from the thread I linked. :)

Huh?! You can either buy on Steam and it will be Steam linked/activated OR buy it on DVD and either:

  1. Play it with the DVD in the computer and not activate via Steam OR
  2. Activate your DVD copy of FM with Steam so that you don't need the DVD in the computer.

What have you done then? Pre-ordered FM10 on Steam? If so, then look at this. :)

Hm, okay. I don't use steam for too many games but I guess I'll register FM10 on it when my DVD comes.

You can create shortcuts from steam and then run the game from the shortcut without needing to open steam, right?

Yes. My FM shortcut on the desktop points to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\football manager 2009\fm.exe". :)

Steam still runs though doesn't it if the program is closed? i.e. it'll load up Steam, connect / login, then run the game?

No. The shortcut calls the FM exe. Nothing in the shortcut to launch Steam. Just tested to be sure and kept Task Manager going. No Steam.exe before launch or after. And from what I can tell FM takes the same amount of time to appear on screen with or without Steam already running. :)
