I never knew you could get banned, I'd also be interested in a link ?, what can you get banned for ?
I wonder how the console keeps the ban. I'd say stick in a new harddrive and format to get rid of it.
mac address/console id more than likely
Hacking seems to be the most common, can get temporary bans for bad language amongst other things

Yeah it's MAC address by my searching.
Your friend probably thinks it's a perma ban. Most bans i googled have been month long.

wow, it looks like if you get banned on an official Playstation forum that uses your PSN ID then that ID gets banned completely, even for use with your Playstation, I'll have to remember that, I've had the odd rant on the official forums a few times
