Hi all

I'm meeting up with a few buddies in October for a golf weekend, and would like some recommendations as to decent fun courses to play for a bunch of casual novices, ideally attached to a hotel so that we can indulge while we're not playing.

I also have a question about golf spikes. I'm going to buy some but was wondering which ones were comfortable and good for the money. I'd ideally like to spend £50 or less. In the past I have normally hired or borrowed them but I think it's time I had my own set.

Thanks.

Warwick racecourse is pretty good, only other one I've ever played at is the one in the memorial park in Coventry :p

Nearly got a hole-in-one too, rolled around the cup a full rotation and stopped on the edge

I've played here once:

I enjoyed it, though it's bit noisy in places as it's right next to the M42 (watch the slices!). No hotel though.

I've got a pair of cheap Dunlop spikes from Soccer Sports / Sports Direct (or whatever the chain is called). Comfy enough for my multi-hour hacking sessions :D I think they were about £20.

Thanks all, I will look into those.

I've played at Warwick Racecourse before and whilst it's *ok*, it didn't really feel like a proper golf course in that maintenance was very obviously low and it's set in fairly average settings.

The memorial park in Cov is a pitch and putt iirc :p.

Stratford Oaks is a very nice course to play on.

and then there is also http://www.golftoday.co.uk/clubhouse/coursedir/warwickshire/welfordavon.htm

Whilst not attached to hotels, they are only like 10 minutes away from Stratford town centre so more than easy to get to and from.

:)

Thanks for this, we played at Bidford Grange being the closest one to my house.

It's quite a smart looking place, the course itself was perfect for our level. The greens and fairways were well kept and we really enjoyed the round. For some reason my driver came particularly good which was a pleasant surprise! Many laughs had as usual. There were some sneaky lakes there that presented a good challenge and forget about finding anything hit into the heavy rough. Lots of the bunkers were filled with gravel for some reason and many were being turfed? I can only think that they wanted to make the course slightly easier.

The autumn leaves on the ground meant that finding balls even in only the light rough was a challenge in itself!

Had a great time there anyway and would certainly recommend it. They had a casual approach let's say, as when we paid they forgot to give us our scorecards and didn't give us any badges or tickets to display on our bags as proof that we'd paid. They didn't care whether we had spikes or not (we did) and although they have a dress code which of course we adhered to, you got the impression that nobody was that bothered.

£20 for 18 holes, £10 for club hire, £3 for trolley hire, we played at 10am on Sunday.

Thanks again for the suggestions.
