I've currently got a Rover 220SDi that is my car for day to day use, i'm getting about 50MPG out of it which i'm very happy with.

However i went to this from a Peugeot 406 2.0 Petrol which felt a hell of a lot more refined but could only manage 27MPG.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a car (Diesel!) that might offer me fuel consumption figures closer to the Rover but be a bit more refined like my 406 was, i'm getting sick of all the rattly bits!!

First thing that springs to mind is obviously a 406 Diesel, but what alternatives, i've been looking at Vauxhall Omegas, any good?

Rover 75 Touring CDTI, it will be massive and very comfy.

Depend on your budget though.

Budget is only small, maybe £1200ish.

This is a second car, i don't wanna spend too much as i've another car to run too but the other car is far too thirsty day to day (and it's 25+yrs old).

It's just me & the girlfriend seem to be doing a lot of long motorway journeys nowadays and I hate my Rover on long trips, it kind of scares me even when it starts to reach 90 on the motorway.
