Nokia N900

Late October apparently.

Ive been into a few phone shops about this and just got off the phone from the Nokia Store in Manchester and its not good news....
All the phone shops have either not had a clue when/or even heard about the phone. All but phones4u and 3 didnt know anythingbut anyway; the guys there knew that it's the nokia that has just been released at the trade shows and both said that they would expect some time in December. Having just come off the phone with the Nokia Store, they confirmed this; if they have a definate release date so that i could come in and have a play about with it and the reply was no, they have not yet been informed but they also expect it in December some time.:(:(

oh that sucks :(

I've been looking at this phone and it looks sweet, but it will depend on the quality of the app store. I like the choice of apps for android, if they can match that, then it might do well.
For me, if it has full line 2 functionality, then I will think about getting it very seriously

The N900 runs a version of Linux much closer to the desktop version than Android phones. Porting apps from desktop Linux is pretty easy.

I think that there will be plenty of apps for it, mostly from unofficial repositories I would predict.

I think this looks a bad idea,

Apple, Android Palm and now Blackberry have smartphones covered, IMO there isn't space for Nokia in this market anymore as their products just aren't good enough.

The OS doesn't look fantastic to me from the video, I actually can't believe people still buy Nokia phones.

And you somehow missed one of the biggest and oldest smartphone OS's, WM (which incidently probably sells more units than symbian when PDA's and mini computers are included in the tally).

What's with all the Resistive screen bashing? Yes it is a little slower, but to the point of not really being noticeable, yet it has benefits:

Better power consumption
Ability to use non skin related impliments (stylus, gloves, pens etc.)
Arguably more accurate and can be pressure sensitive

Can you even put a screen protector on capactive screens to stop scratches? Or is that why all the iPhone users have those massive leather cases for them?

Those alone are major positives for a huge number of people, whereas the only benefit of capactive is it's (marginally) faster and it doesn't have the slight flex that resistive screens do (again, modern ones you have to actually look for it).:p

A friend at Nokia has played with one on and off, says it is still quite buggy. But then he moans about all their phones before big release as he sees the handsets go through growing pains.

Got a source on that? Canalys used to include PDAs in their numbers and WM never got close to Symbian.

Well the Nokia store in London told me late October.. Although since Ive heard it may be moved back to November, however early Nov.

Typical bloody Nokia.

On the wiki they claim 26'th October, however who will be nuts enough to buy it for £470 (if you look) - £500 bar die hard fans? Got N810 here, and yes the upgrade would be very nice, but not anywhere near £500 mark they want for it.

400 -> 600 cpu
ram x 2
gpu
battery life x 2 (claimed*)
phone
free 32gb sd card*

What else is really "ground breaking" about it that somehow makes it end up with a hefty half a grand cost?

Contacted 3 about this the other day and they rang me back yesterday. The woman said that they are getting the N900 soon but she couldn't give me an exact date. Basically just said keep checking the website and as soon as the phone is available it will go up. So no firm confirmation but hopefully we'll see it in the next month or so.

You do realise that a 3 phone monkey knows less about when they are getting a new phone like the N900 than your local bin man, right?

N900 Review

The original website is Russian so I've just linked to the Engadget snippet.

It's one thing to read a product preview here and there, but if you really want the Maemo 5 experience before you're even able to set foot in a store and buy an N900, look no further than mobile-review's characteristically exhaustive look at the platform. From the endless array of screenshots, you quickly get the impression that this is an attractive shell -- evolutionary and familiar for owners of the 770, N800, or N810, yes, but significantly freshened nonetheless. Here are a few big takeaways from the War & Peace-esque compendium:

* There's apparently an N920 in the works that lacks a QWERTY keyboard. We've heard rumors in the past that the N900 will remain Nokia's sole Maemo 5 phone for at least a few months, so we might look to see this in 2010.
* Process management invokes a curiously webOS-like card view which looks great. Helps when you have a beefy OMAP3 in there, doesn't it?
* The call log effortlessly aggregates GSM and VoIP calls -- a neat trick, and a tip of the hat to Maemo's roots as a VoIP-friendly platform.
* MMS isn't supported, strangely, though the platform's SMS support handles both threaded and traditional views.
* While chatting up Maemo's calendar services, Eldar specifically says that he "Palm's WebOS-powered organizer much more enticing and promising." * * Lack of Google Calendar synchronization sucks, but we're not sure what that's all about -- Maemo does support Exchange ActiveSync, after all.
* Eldar his the nail on the head regarding Maemo's Mozilla-based browser: it's always been good, just way too slow. The N900 cures those ails on better hardware, though "it hasn't caught up with the rest of the pack yet." Flash support seems wonky and performance isn't always great -- it depends on how many apps are running.
* The music player is pretty bare-bones (typical Nokia), though anyone happy with the N97's sound quality will feel right at home here -- it's the same hardware.
* The integrated Maps app apparently lags way behind the bar that Ovi Maps has set over on S60 -- super slow and "resource-hungry."

Of course, the beauty of Maemo is its wide-open philosophy, so many of the niggles here that aren't corrected by Nokia proper will hopefully be handled by the community at large -- and the good news is that by the time you get done reading this review, the N900 should be on store shelves for you to try yourself.

No MMS and poor flash performance means that it doesn't meet my needs, which is a shame as it was looking quite good.

Flash performance will clearly be improved with updats and the like.
And as for no MMS, why make a phone with no MMS!?

indeed lets just hope it has cut and paste!

pre-ordered mine on vodafone, my contracts up and im tired of my 02 signal.

I certainly hope so as I had a look at the 'official' app store and the selection of apps is pretty poor, to the point that it has put me off for the moment.

On the plus side I have seen pics and specs for the sony xperia x3 which has me interested as well. Im thinking I will wait till after xmas and see what apps are out then before making my mind up, all I know is I definately want a linux phone, Im running wm6.5 at the moment on my i780 and its pants. I stuck android on it, and even buggy with not everything working, I was still very impressed and want more :D

No MMS is a strange one, would have thought it would need MMS for most networks to pick it up, especially ones like 3. Like Flare said i'd imagine flash performance will improve and theres bound to be other browesers available at some point. The calender and maps thing don't really bother me, very rare i use either. Still think its the phone i'm going to go for, just need to have a play with one.
