What is the difference between the asus xonar DX and DX2

The D2X is bigger, has an EMI shield and does DTS Connect. It also comes with some extra free software (powerDVD, somthing that converts your music to Dolby Headphone mp3s, some audio testing software and a couple of recording programs)

Otherwise, not a lot of difference. I think it's only worth stepping up the Xonar line for an ST or STX, which have built in headphone amplifiers that will drive more demanding headphones.

As per the other thread - the HD595s and Goldrings don't absolutely need an amp but they do benefit from one.

It passes through DTS from DVDs etc over optical to a receiver. DTS Connect (TM) is encoding non-DTS surround on the fly so it can be sent to a DTS receiver.

In addition, DX uses cheap Cirrus Logic DACs, whereas D2 and D2X feature a TI Burr Brown PCM1796 DAC :o

So would it be worth moving from a D1 to say D2/X.

No. I've read plenty of reviews comparing the two and they all said analogue sound quality was almost indestinguishable (despite the hardware differences).

If you don't have either, it's worth getting the D2 / D2X over the D1/DX if you want any of the software or DTS Connect.

You get an extra socket on the back too, on the DX the mic in is also the optical out, so you get to use one or the other.

In hindsight, if I had the choice I'd go for the DTS connect, but the analogue out on the DX seems very very good to me.
