Self build house - advice please

I think the idea of having a fitted projector is a GREAT idea, but make sure it has ventilation!

Hello fish

Not much to report at the moment since last update. We are having such a carry on with the mortgage company it's unreal, they are totally dragging their heels and putting as much obstacles in our way as they can... I'm sure it's a con just so they can keep your application fee without actually lending money... so until we get the money there's nothing we can do on the house.

Cool cheers for the update mate. I was wondering if you managed to put the walls up over the bank holiday thats all?

No not yet, but all were getting is electricity and water and both come right up the side of the plot only a couple of metres from the front door so I cant see it being hugely expensive to get connected up.

It's always at the back of my mind that it could be an issue so I might do some enquiries!

Hey folks,

Finally an update. Mortgage company finally said they would lend to us after weeks of them faffing about... so I've went ahead and got the kit up!

It only took a few hours, I can only imagine how far along we would be by now if the mortgage company hadn't held us back.

Start of kit erection.

All the scrappy bits of green paper have been fixed and the central load bearing partition completed.

All that was a few days ago... then today we received the roof trusses!

Next step is sticking the trusses on top of the kit, this will be happening on Tuesday... we have a Crane booked to come along and lift the trusses into place for the joiners to attach.

Very exciting :D

Excellent stuff. I'm a grad structural engineer and I'd be scared of building my own home...quite the commitment. You should be very proud.

Thanks

A lovely part of Scotland you live in.

Must say I am quite jealous! :D

Love to get land up north.

Yeah it is a lovely place to live, I hope to get a pic of the view over towards the sea from upstairs once I get the trusses up.. its really nice I think.

Sweet build, I was expecting to see a framed building of some sort go up due the lack of proper foundations. Coming along nicely

You mentioned this early on..
I've been told that a vaccum tube solar panel can be beneficial for heating water and there are grants available so could be worth looking into.

I looked into this a few months back but due to the fact I don't own the house I couldn't justify the cost. DO IT... Even in Scotland there will be enough sunlight to provide you with either underfloor heating from it or hot water... Or both.. but you'd need a fair few tubes for that. :D Small house like that I expect to see an outlay of about 7K for the hot water system / tubes / special boiler and pipework, the grant is currently about £500.

Also look into fibre optics as your main lighting, you can do some seriously funky stuff with it

Love it, very jealous always wanted to do something like that, it must be heaps of fun.
We have a timber construct house so its good to see someone else going for one :)

it could be a C35 or C40 mix and as we don't know the ground conditions I don't know how we could even comment.

Great stuff, congratulations. I would LOVE to do something like this when I've paid most of my current mortgage, in the meantime I'll live the dream via this thread :p
