Take it away is an Arts Council initiative designed to help more people get involved in learning and playing music. The scheme allows individuals to apply for a loan of up to £2,000 for the purchase of any kind of musical instrument, and pay it back in nine monthly instalments, completely interest free.

Basically all you need is a debit card, to put down a deposit, but it says you must be working, how would they know if all they do is run a credit check with the debit card etc?

Edit - Man it's late, but I think you'd need to let them know who you were working for and what pay you get and hours, surely? Not just on a debit card.

Well I'll be damned. I could get myself a nice Gibson... but I don't feel like having a loan. :p

say its costing you 2k, you pay £200 on the day, walk away with the guitar same day, the next month you pay the same again £200, for the following 9 months, so basically 10 installments of £200 to buy the guitar of your dreams!

I'm fairly sure credit checks include your monthly income so it would be easy to tell if someone wasn't working.

£2000 is a ridiculous amount of money for a beginner, even if you include a years worth of lessons - unless you're buying a double bass or something!

he isnt a beginner, were all pretty much pro musos, so anyone can take advantage, but i agree 2k is a lot for someone starting out!

It seems that the idea of the scheme is to get new people interested in music though but anyone can use it.

I'm not so desperate for that guitar that I need it right now. I think I'll do the old-fashioned thing and buy it when I can afford it. ;)

yea that is the idea, in which case i believe the 2k is a tad high if you are just starting out, could land you in serious trouble, but its great for musicians who are either pro, or getting very into, as it means you dont have to skint yourself, as 2k isnt lying around for everyone!

No don't get me wrong I think it's a great deal, but to be fair most half serious musciains I know couldn't rub together 220 pence per month let alone £222! :p

there doing it wrong! its very doable with the situation my bands in currently, working every weekend! (stressful and hectic at times) or are you on about serious bedroom musos aha

Yeah I agree with that. I think it would have been great to have something like this when I was at school and very involved in music as there were often kids from poorer families who were stupidly talented. I played the violin and by grade 8 you needed a decent instrument, I don't think anyone I knew at my standard carried less than £800 worth of equipment and that's just for high school orchestras!

im very lucky that im where i am today because of my parents if it wasnt for them id have had poor gear, and i wouldnt be anywhere as close as i am where i am today, so i think its good that now kids/teens get the chance of having a semi decent instrument which is affordable with this scheme, especially the less fortunate
