iv been reading the i5 overclocking thread but theres a lot of different motherboards.
I have asrock p55 motherboard at the moment ( the pc is still in bits, need the ram, previous ram i bought was faulty so i cant switch it on and screen shot what i can get when overclocking and i have the gfx card out to run this pc ) I can get it to 3.0ghz on stock voltage. Every time i try to increase the voltage i just get blue screen on start up.

Im taking it that its the motherboard is crap for overclocking or its faulty. either way im thinking of replacing it. I have no real budget on the motherboard because iv sold a few stuff.
What board do you think is the best for overclocking a i5 ?

i was eyeing that bored up because its expensive. But expensive doesnt mean the best. But that review does tell me its worth the extra money!

it is expensive but you get what you pay for really, plus it has everything you need and will be good for oc,i,m getting this board in a few weeks for my new build with a 860 chip and i,m really looking forward to building it :)

theres seems to be a lot of good reviews on the msi p55 gd80 going about, i think it holds the i5 overclocking title or something along those lines

The msi p55 gd80 rocks. I have an one with an i7 860. I managed to get 4.2ghz on air. There are seriously pages of stuff in the Bios for overclocking. Also you can save overclocking profiles. I have saved profiles for stock, 3.8ghz, 4.0ghz and 4.2ghz. So I can reboot and choose the clock I want. Its also well packaged with lots of accessories. I think it came with 8 sata cables! I like the LED displays on the board, one for temperature and one for cmos phases. Very cool. I also like the header and probe connections you get. For instance I dialed in 1.4 volts on the CPU and measured with a voltmeter on the header at exactly 1.4volts. What else? You get a very nice poster of the motherboard that you can hang on the wall. Dont laugh, I have owned a serious about of motherboards in my time, and this is the best package yet. MSI have really pulled out the stops with this one. Its miles better than the last MSI board I owned (P6N SLI), which was well functional. Oh and its comes with a WINKI. Lol, google it.

isnt the msi p55 gd80 the one with the OC genie or something? i like + and - buttons for overclocking.

Yes it is. I press it on mine just to see what it did and it took my 860 to just under 3.8 Ghz. Not had a chance to overclock properly yet as I have been waiting for my 1156 adaptor for my Noctua but it arriver yesterday.

another vote for the GD80 it got my i5 upto 4ghz within minutes of installing it

BUT......... they are quite expensive and im sure some of the cheaper boards are just as good for overclocking

with all the newer x58 boards out do you regret going p55 ?

i was looking at the MSI GD80 its a properly nice board with rave reviews, and i love the oc genie feature amongst other stuff.

still.. i cant decided between this and a x58 msi (x58 msi is cheaper ??)

Not at all , my pc is purely for gaming ,browsing and home theater, i got the motherboard at the special offer £85 , the cpu for £160 with a free game that id all ready pre-ordered online, so cancelled that preorder and saved myself £20 and finally the geil ultra ddr3 RAM at £75 , so £320 for my latest upgrade

I have a quad core at 4ghz now (with headroom for a higher OC), i personnaly feel this platform will now last me 3 maybe 4 years before i need to update it again and by that time god knows what will be out but no doubt i'll have to upgrade the full package again anyway, so for now im well happy :)

On a side note , i do intend to upgrade my graphics card at least twice before i need to touch my cpu again :D

GD80 seems to be the board for me then for the i5 :) what about the GD65. they seem to be the same but the GD80 has 1 extra PCIe x16 slot. I would like to save abit of money :) not taking the chance on the new nvidia cards. I expect them to be abit expensive so if i save a bit i could afford the middle class of the gt300s.

off topic: i see a lot of people getting p55 motherboards and putting i7s in them. Do i7s work better on the p55 boards? im not interested in going i7 because of the price. But maybe after a few years when the i5s become out of date. Or maybe months. i might got for i7 or any newer processor.

They're not putting the 1366 socket 9 series i7's in them. Intel released 3 new cpu's alongside their P55 chipset, these were all socket 1156 cpu's: core i7 870, core i7 860 and the core i5 750.

The 2 new i7 cpu's both have quad cores + hyperthreading like the original 9 series cpu's, whereas the core i5 is just a quad core with no hyperthreading.

As far as good clocking i5 mainboards, well I think more or less all of them are fairly good, with a 4GHz overclock being the norm. If you're interested in the higher end boards though, have you considered the EVGA P55 F.T.W. I have one of these and has been rock solid so far, you may want to have a look at my thread here :)

I've got this board with my 860 and it's a very beautiful board! Besides it's great look people have managed good overclocks with it.

I'm still running stock with my 860 as I'm waiting for the H50 bracket so I can get overclocking.

I'm a total noob, but with someone's help maybe they can make me overclock it to 4GHZ if I'm lucky!

What memory would be recommended for an MSI P55-GD65 motherboard paired with an i7 860? I take it anything over 1333mhz is a waste?

And how does this compair with the 1366 920 options?

No you want 1600mhz+ as that would give you the option to overclock if you want. Plus you can overclock the memory without moving the CPU by changing the memory ratio so reaching 1600 and above shouldn't be a problem.

I haven't finished building my p55 PC yet, but I'm sure someone with a finished build will add their experience.
