With the upcoming of "Boarderlands" to arrive on Steam soon coupled with the already heavily advertised game "Fallen Earth", I just thought I would gather some opinions on this relatively new style of FPS meets MMO/RPG game.

So what will it be members. Yey or a Ney???

The Jaded Raver :D

Big fan of this hybrid genre and its always good to see new games take it on. It's not exactly new though. There's Deus Ex and the System Shock games to give a couple of examples which have been around for quite a while now.

as long as its not pay per month

tbh, a lot of people tell me that they cant believe that I pay £10 a month to play a game online, but then they spend £80 a month every month of brand new releases where as I'll only buy the major releases and still have a game to play that I enjoy.

PPM games are not as bad as you think.

Doesn't S.T.A.L.K.E.R. incorporate elements of Rpg into it?

Do'h, been trying to think of my other "go to" game for why fps/rgp's have so far been mostly horrible failures.

Both Stalker, and Bioshock do the whole "character levels up, significantly" thing, but enemies, do not really at all.

Stalker was the worst, the first 2-3 guns you get are falsely and stupidly inaccurate, get to the next area, first gun you get is pinpoint accurate, a gun within the first 90mins of the game, is good enough to headshot anyone for the entire game. Likewise the artefacts made you almost invunerable within a couple hours playtime, giving the rest of the game no feel to it. Bioshocks the same, 2 hours in, invunerable, lose any real sense of caring about your superhuman self compared to the mere mortals you're fighting.

Stalker, was supposed to be a massive RPG though, which ran out of time, money and man power so cut tonnes of the game out, thats understandable but still badly done. Bioshock, was just badly thought out.

Too many FPS/RGP games are focusing primarily on the character scaling up through the game, while enemies don't, which is where they are tending to fail heavily compared to a normal RPG which do one of two things, enemies of various levels and you can only take on some after you get to a certain level of ability. Others where enemies get harder as you get stronger.

Fallout 3 was a nice balance between FPS and RPG. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I don't have time for MMO-RPGs though. I know full well I'd get addicted!

Fallen Earth is actually very good. Considering it's an indie developer, and a newly released mmorpg I've had very few issues. It's a lot more harsh than certain established mmorpg's, and doesn't hold your hand too much. It feels a bit like early days DAoC to me, there's a hell of a lot of potential there and it's the first mmorpg since DAoC to get me hooked.

And you get to ride motorbikes around while dressed like a punk and shooting things with a pistol in each hand ;)

Fallen Earth isn't dire at all, it's just so wildly different from what people have come to expect from an mmo (easy progression, hand-holding, false sense of accomplishment) that a lot of people who have never experienced anything except this give it up after a few hours play time, usually with comments like

WTF I have to make my own gunz?!!?
Which class owns in PvP? What do you mean there are no set classes??
What do you mean you can't hearthstone?

Excuse for a picture! And yes, I'm aware that it's night and I'm wearing sunglasses. Bite me.

Id just Like to know whether Fallen Earth is actually worth the pay per month? Also what's the community like??

I'm definitely going to sub for a few months, see where it goes. It's got a lot of rough edges, but tons of potential. Next few months will see if the devs can follow through and keep players interested.

Community is generally excellent. The kiddies just don't last long, there's not enough instant gratification, and there are always GMs active in the help channel.
