AMD just launched Radeon HD 5870 and HD 5850. The cards have impressed us in many ways with top notch performance and impressive energy efficiency when idle. The Radeon HD 5700 series isn't far off now, and after it we have the entry level series and not the least Radeon HD 5870X2 sporting two Cypress/RV870 GPUs on same PCB. While we expect AMD to introduce a refresh this Spring, we have learned the next generation is slated for launch in Q3 2010.

Just like with the just launched Radeon HD 5800 series, the name has not been set at this point and the name right now is Radeon 100, which is subject to change though as the product materializes. Three ASICs are in the works that we know of. We're awaiting confirmation on the names, but they sound a bit Greek to us (think gargantuan).

Unless it comes with some extra featured not supported by the previous gen cards, i recon ill just pick up another 5870, 6 months down the line for cheap.

I'm sure these current cards are more than perfect for future proofing.

Agreed, it will probably be a die shrink and/or clock increases, maybe a few extra processing cores

So will this be like the 4890? maybe a 5890 or a 6xxx?

I have a 4870, I don't have the money right now so I am sticking with the 4870 but do plan to try Eyefinity so I want the next uber card really.

well HD 4870 was released June 2008, HD 5870 was released September 2009, makes sense for 6870 to be released around june/september 2010, and dont forget that 5870 is twice as fast as 4870 dooh ;)

and this is still a YEAR away...

It would be like a 5890

No, it wouldn't, the article, correctly or incorrectly, states refresh in spring NEW GENERATION in Q3 2010, it couldn't really have been any clearer.

Wouldn't be surprising, and the likelyhood of them wanting to get off this turd 40nm process as soon as possible to something less leaky and far more profitable isn't at all shocking.

The question would be, can Global Foundries have any of their new bought fabs(small group of them in singapore) reworked for 32nm by then(they can afford to) so will we see the next set of cards produced cheaper by their own manufacturing company, or will we still be relying on TSMC to get the next process working well by then. Considering TSMC have failed to get their 65, 55, 40nm processes in the past 3 years working well and quickly, thats the biggest question.
