Engagement ring prices

Spent £800 iirc. Didn't have a choice as she, her mother, her sister and three mates of hers went with us ring shopping. Imagine her shrieking in delight saying 'This is the one!!' and her mates getting excited with her and then all six of them turning to me expectantly (with the five of her posse having lazers in their eyes saying, Buy it, or else.. ). What am I going to say? No? :D

Yes and i'll remember to tell her that when i come home with a £50 rig, i'm sure she will love that... Regardless of what they say, usually the more money you spend on a single symbolic object the more special it makes them feel.

So the more you love them the more you spend.

Should she even know how much it cost. Any woman wanting to know doesn't deserve the ring IMHO.

One of my friends proposed to his gf using a paperclip with a bead on because he wanted to pick the 'real' ring with her later. She picked a fairly inexpensive ring as a daily symbol of their engagement but always says her real ring is the 'hand made' paperclip one.

They've been married 16 years now.

That's someone you want to marry. Not someone who cares about how much is cost!

I agree to an extent, a woman who values the gesture more than the cost is a keeper but these are few and far between, every woman likes to be spoilt and feel special.

Women are pretty fickle and vain however, and
need something to show their friends.

This is 100% true.

Yeah even though I spent what I did on my GF's and she came to pick it with me - I made certain she didnt know how much it cost :D

I spent what it cost to get the ring I wanted. Actually ended up cheaper as the jeweller charged me less than quoted for some reason.

Other half didn't care how much it was, she just likes it :)

As for going and letting her choose it, where's the fun in that? :) Just buy one, you'd know what she likes, and it'll be more of a surprise then :)

Hehe unless she doesnt like it - and has to keep it for the rest of her life!! I'm not gambling on that one! :D

We knew we were going to get engaged - we choose the ring - then I got to surprise her on the date when I would do it - was a nice family get to together so everyone in her family and mine got to see it :D

I'm planning on spending £1,500, simply because that's how much it cost for the ring I want to give to her.

Now that's a sensible answer.

Myself, I only spent £200. To be fair though, I had just spent £6000 to move across the world to be with her and quite suddenly decided to propose on the day she flew over to help me move.

(I say suddenly but we had been together for 6 years at that point and she had only moved back to the UK a few months prior in order to find a job and a place for us to live)

I spent £900 on an engagement ring just a few months ago. I involved her in the ring shopping just to see what she liked and didn't like so I could pick the final ring myself. I found this helpful because she was able to tell me the size of diamond she wanted and the style etc which really I didn't have a clue about. She didn't want me to spend more than £300 but for me nothing at that price stood out and I wanted something really special for her and that at the same time, didn't cost the world. I know she'll wear it for the rest of her life and never take it off just like any of the other jewellery I've bought her which makes it worth while to me. I'm a full time student and only work part time so to me that was about 3 months wages anyway!

In the end I bought a loose diamond which was only 0.31 carats (the size she wanted) but practically flawless and I chose the setting for it. Everyone can't believe how beautiful her ring is. Some family have even commented that it looks nicer than the £4k ring my brother recently bought his fiancé! The main thing is that both of us love it so it was money well spent.

Earlier on in the year I booked a trip to Paris as a birthday present so I decided to wait until we were there in August where I then proposed and she said yes!

The ring in question (on my finger I should add lol):

I'm going to propose this week :D but haven't purchased the ring yet.

I'm going to get one commissioned by Chris Parry (a previous thread on here) but was looking to buy the diamond myself. Blue Nile appears to be the most popular - but can anyone reccomend any other sites where I can buy one from....I'm not looking to spend more than £400 max.
