Buy her a ring with a built-on potato peeler. It's both practical and sends out the right messages about your expectations regarding marriage.

I'm curious:

Engagement rings - do engaged women wear it all the time i.e. there's potentially £500+ on their left hand? Or do they not wear the proper ring and just wear a cheaper one the rest of the time?

Same with wedding rings?

In which case, I'd feel a lot more comfortable buying say relatively cheaper rings to wear all the time (girl allowing!!!) and spend the money more wisely.

I have a:
GIA certified
D colour
VVS2
43pt
Brilliant Cut
Oval
Mounted across my finger in a custom ring - very plain and very open (almost tension set) so you can see the whole of the stone.
We had it custom made by Exclusive Jewellery in Brighton - told them our budget for the stone, what shape we wanted - and they got in a load for us to choose from.
The diamond I ended up with was the smallest one we had to choose from, but the closest to 'perfect' - the hubby said that was just like me ;)

I wear it all the time - either on my finger (usually) or on a necklace (diamond cut to match the ring) when I am at work - it's insured!!
Cost - doesn't matter enough to go into the details, but by far the most expensive thing either of us own, including the cars!
Edit - I didn't get the engagement ring until we'd been married over 6months btw!

The one I want is about £30 or so. I'd be happy with a Haribo ring :)

It doesn't matter how much it costs, if she loves you she'll marry you no matter how much bling she gets!

but, I have the money, why not spend it?

Answered your own question.

You have the money to burn, not everyone needs to keep a lady interested with money. As well as everyone else being different, I personally wouldn't ever date someone that thought the same.

This is the ring I am looking at, any advice?

Platinum Four-Claw Solitaire Engagement Ring Setting has a 0.50 carat Round diamond with Ideal-cut, F-colour, and VVS2-clarity.

They wear it all the time. In fact Mrs Asprilla's engagement ring is only insured whilst she's wearing it.

That's a terrible assumption to make; that it's all about the money. For example, I like buying paintings and I do so because I like them and like looking at them, the cost doesn't come into it. If I see something I like and it's very expensive then I will buy it if I can afford it. It's not about keeping someone happy with money or showing off.

Mrs Asprilla will be wearing that ring every day for the rest of her life so it's worth investing in something that we both like looking at.

What insurance do people have on their engagement rings? and how much do you pay?

I've got Mrs ring insured on the house insurance, but we have to declare it as a specific item. No idea how much it costs as I've never had a quote without it.

A mate of mine spent $10k in the US, which is nuts imho.

Spend as much as it takes to find the right ring, without spending more than you can afford.

I've heard it can be just as cheap to go on holiday and buy it rather than buy it in the UK, due to price variations. Obviously there's the risk of being stung by import duty etc when going through customs, but is there any credence in this? With the relatively weak pound I'd presume that, if it were true, a middle eastern country would be the most likely bet?

If you can afford it the fair play but 90% of the population will get more pleasure from a holiday or something similar. But at the same time it is going to have to last for a long time and needs to look good, I just think over a certain price you arn't getting much more for your money.

Looks at PC in sig, looks at lack of tan. :( I should take my own advice, I know if I was a woman I would probably have a huge rock. :D
