Gmail account hacked

Just stick to the standard rules:

- Do not use a forgot password question
- Strong passwords only & unique to each site you use.

GMail's servers are not being hacked here, they are getting in either by guessing your password or resetting it with forgot password. Simple as that.
 
I am really surprised at how many people have been hacked!

And will echo the words of others, use different passwords - at least 2, one for your email and another for other sources, means that you can have some kind of damage control if one is cracked.

This happened to me a few weeks back (Steam, Hotmail and Gmail - all with different passwords). First attempt at Gmail failed - could not remember when I got it or who invited me. Tried again and guessed a more acc. date I joined and it worked. Gmail need to do better - Hotmail allow you to add extra details that can help prove who you are.
 
Gmail do a good job IMO, they will let you reset your password over SMS if you give them your mobile, or via an alternate email address.

Its just a case of learning this stuff and setting it up before you get bitten.
 
Now thinking about it... something similar happened to me several weeks ago. Recovered password easy enough using Gmail's facilities (which I'd previously set up). I use seperate complex passwords too... actually thought at the time I was just being a 'tard and forgetting my passwords.

KeePass is now my best friend :p
 
Happened to me with my Hotmail account recently, was gutted because they then went on to hack my youtube and ebay accounts. Got em' all back eventually!
 
argg my gmail account had been hacked and sent spam to everyone in my address back. I can't access it now because google had locked it down due to suspicious activity :(

Problem is that I can't remember most of the questions on the form as it has been a while :(

Brute force says otherwise :p. Alphanumeric with special characters is the way forward ;).

I've just updated my 'secret question' just incase.. it's an old serial key that I can scarily still remember off the top of my head (the game kept forgetting it).. good luck breaking that.
 
this sucks they won't return the account me due as I can't remember a lot of the questions. I thought they would be be able to see that my current ip address is what I have been using these last couple of weeks to access my gmail account.
 
Did you type in a secondary email address when you signed up to gmail? I think you can use that to reset it.

I've tried but the hacker changed the email to an Hotmail address which I don't own email address :(
 
I know someone who set up a Yahoo! email account years ago. Some years later, she changed her password but must in some way have mistyped the new password; when she tried to log on the following day, she couldn't.

No matter how much information she gave Yahoo about emails she had received or sent, they would not reset her password unless she could quote the initial "security" details, which she couldn't :(
 
Just been on the news, apparently it was through phishing and more than 20,000 email addresses and passwords has being published online :\
