It's just a common yellow jacket wasp. Probably a queen by the size of it. I suggest you kill it rather than let it loose, otherwise it might start a nest near your house.

I've been stung by hornets a few times. It is really really painful - like someone stabs you with a knife and there's a huge burning sensation. It's not nice.

We have loads in Cyprus, they're fairly innocuous if you leave 'em be, but are quick to swarm if you pose a threat. They can be lethal to small kids.,

Yeah, it's a hornet.

I was out exploring with the other half and we found 2 of these babies in a log!

Very scared taking pictures of them though! Everytime i saw them kind of flinch i jumped a mile! Especially as she said they can kill you, hehe!
