Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising

I liked BIA:HH because the set pieces had character to them but I'm aware that it was a mess in most other ways.

I don't really want to get into a debate about what the word generic means in the context of FPS games because it could turn into a stalemate of nonsense. All I will say though is that CoD is formulaic imo, not generic. Generic is "meh". Generic is a lack of distinguishing quality. Generic is seeing a sandbox map and a bunch of A.I placed in scripted bunker positions and only having a choice of one or two assault rifles throughout an entire game. I grow tired of romping around airstrips in order to blow up weapons crates but I've been doing it since Delta Force lol. Perhaps I am just getting bored of military FPS games.

We will see though.

see, i see generic as meaning 'not special', 'like the others in the group' and to be honest there is nothing that would mark, for instance, cod out as anything other than part of the group.

whereas this does do something (generally) different, it is open world, AI isn't going to spawn just behind you and it isn't going to be placed in obscure and unrealistic locations just to catch you out because it knows your coming before you even know you're coming. you aren't going to have a million different guns to use because they specifically don't use a million different guns in the army, it's yanks vs the chinese (i believe) both of which operate professional military groups with standard issue weaponry.

this game seems to be specifically not cookie cutter in it's appearance which is why a lot of people don't seem to like it. people constantly complain about how many shots it takes to kill someone, or how accurate a terribly inaccurate gun is and so on but when faced with the opposite they cling to their 'formulaic' (i'd say generic) games.

edit: thought i'd mention that i don't have any beef with cod specifically, i enjoy playing it a lot and it's a great game to play with mates (and i will be buying MW2 for those reasons), it just seems everyone's measuring stick these days is the CoD franchise (specifically MW) and so i figured i would too.

At last a very decent looking FPS which isn't COD .... I've been on there today and COD 4 now is full of nothing but lame campers ... this will be a welcome change for me, getting tired of the COD series now, even re-considering my purchase of MW2.

vincent, I'm not one of those people. I'm a flashpoint vet and am all about sandbox, non scripted, gaming. However, I'm just worried that this game has little else going on besides really generic mission templates. The mission editor is going to be vital for me to truly enjoy this one. The problem is in balancing the visceral set pieces of CoD with the open ended nature of Flashpoint. If you don't have an element of "codness" it will feel like a sim (not totally a bad thing imo) but too much and you've got WaW! I hope CM have pulled it off.

at the end of the day an engaging and accessible sim is what they were aiming at though which i think they've pulled off, it's sim like in it's attention to detail, bullet drop, weather changes, sounds, scenery and scale but also offers the accessibility for people like me who want a more sim-like game, but don't want ArmA et al

Can't wait for this to turn up!
It's going to be refreshing playing a fps where you have to actually think about tactics and not rely on the spawn, die, try again- run to next checkpoint approach.

I was looking forward to this game but must say I have my doubts as well. I pretty much though the same upon looking at the video. I'm all for taking time over kills etc but that video made it look like I'd just be shooting specs of dust in the distance.

Still going to give it a try though, we'll see :).
