hooray for political correctness, it's a shame it isn't retrospective, then we could destroy all Mel Brookes films and erase some classic comedy genius *cough* I mean some foul insensitive racist propaganda

Or perhaps I found the OPs joke tasteless. It's not as if I asked for a retraction or apology, so I wouldn't say I'm making mountains out of mole hills. I just made a remark expressing my distaste about his "joke". Since he posted it on a public forum s/he should be expecting that some people will react negatively. After all, his post touched on a sensitive subject - that of disability. There are bound to be some people that don't find it funny, and unless I'm very wrong I saw that some more people expressed their distaste too.

You're spot on about the "passing the time" bit though!

Edit: On second thought the OP might have been a successful troll.

Do you ring up the BBC and complain when you hear someone say something rude before the watershed?
I bet you do!

Well civilisations tend to evolve over time and realise the mistakes of the past and make sure they don't repeat them. Some things are for the better and you can't expect to be going around clubbing women on the head and dragging them to your house anymore. The more multicultural societies become the more respect and understanding has to be instilled to be people so that everyone can get along.

As for the old movies, they are fine as they are as long as someone understands the context and the culture of the times. For example some of Mark Twain's books include racist words, that does not mean we should ban them but that we should understand the context they were written in.

Laughing at jokes that offend people has to do with personal taste and of course with understanding whether the person telling them is honestly telling them as a joke and they don't hold an offensive behaviour/mindset themselves that simply manifests through their jokes. That's why offensive jokes may be funny in-between your friends but not when you tell them to an unknown audience.

The context of GD is lulz. That justifies everything.

Comedians do..

Relax.

I liked this because the post started off very much like one would expect a charity plea, in fact the request for £2 a month echos the well-known charity Oxfam and their plea to help children in the developing world. This is especially enhanced by the description given of 'little Timmy' and the hardships which he has to endure every day, which evokes feelings of sympathy tinged with sadness, and also engenders a willingness to contribute to assist little Timmy in his endeavours.

Then, when I scrolled down to see the bottom of the post, I saw that in actual fact, instead of being a plea for charity, the post was discussing the sale of a hypothetical video of Timmy for the price of £2, I then pictured in my mind what the actual actions of Timmy would look like, preserved in the medium of video and found the thought of this very amusing. The amusement was enhanced by the realisation that the initial description designed to engender sympathy were deliberately misleading, to maximise the contrast in emotions between sadness and symapthy to pleasure and hilarity at the video of little Timmy.

Overall, I appreciated both the juxtaposition of charity and humour, the element of surprise as well as the visual imagery provided by the description of little Timmy and the video, which I found amusing and so smiled, although I did not laugh out loud.

exactly, I don't find disabled children funny but this is funny!

I am even happy to laugh at racist jokes but I think people of different races should be treated equal. Comedy is exempt as it is comedy and shouldn't be taken seriously. the problem is some people cannot differentiate between the two.

As south Park Says, all or nothing.

Is it? I thought that the sticky said:
Sensitivity to other people's beliefs & situation

A lot of people will come from different backgrounds, cultures and religions. Be mindful of how your post comes across - don't purposefully provoke or post defamatory comments towards people's beliefs or situations. Some people are more sensitive than others about certain things, so have some compassion and engage the brain before posting something off the cuff which might be offensive.

If it is indeed about the lulz then where exactly do we post serious topics?

Anyone heard of the show 'Abnormally funny people' ?
Simon Minty & other disabled people will tell all these jokes & a lot worse

quote from Minty

"There's not much disability comedy about", says Minty, "probably because non-disabled comedians have an anxiety about being offensive. Disability is one of the last taboos, but there's so much humour there."
