Hi,

Just replaced my old card with a 5870 last night. The 8800GTX scored about 13500 in 3Dmark and the 5870 scored about 16500. Is this latter score far too low? It seems it to me, I thought the new card would have blown the old one away...

I'm running XP with the beta 5870 driver but I'd still think the score should me much higher than that.

Hmmm...

3dmark 06 places a lot of emphasis on cpu power to come up with its score. a lot of people have seen this. I added another videocard to my system a while back and it got a very small bump in performance. 3dmark vantage was a different story.

try a game or 2? just a thought....

Don't get me wrong, I *always* test it like that. If games run with a better FPS when I upgrade a gpu I'm happy. I just thought I'd run 3Dmark and see the new score and was surprised.

You can't Trust Benchys they are Crap, I don't even have them on my HD anymore.
Just pick your fave game that you know inside out & go play it maxxed out, If you can't notice any difference then you've wasted your money but if you get a Stiffy then its all win.

Yup as mentioned above, 3dmark06 is not soo good a benchie for the new generation of cards. Vantage and recent games benchies will give shows it's true potential.

Same here, they're largely irrelevant nowadays. If you want to use a benchmark, use a non-synthetic one, like the Crysis/Call of Juarez/Lost Planet/RE5 benchmarks, they're much more relevant and illustrative for new hardware.

You want a good 06 score, then buy a quad ;) otherwise don't use it to mark your GPU's performance, 3DMARK Vantage and its GPU score is a much more accurate way to judge performance.

Vantage only runs in Vista is that right? And I won't install the piece of tripe that is Vista on my PC. I won't I won't I won't!

Looking at your sig 2GB of RAM isnt going to be fun for gaming with said textures flying about at super awesome quality.

Vista is fine? Are you for real? I installed it and used it for a few weeks, then came to the conclusion it was pure style over substance. Everything ran slower, drivers were few and far between and nothing was where it should be!

I tried 7 briefly but it looked and felt the same as Vista for me. Yes one day I'll have to bite the bullet (especially with DX11) but for now I'm sticking with XP.

I thought the textures were dealt with largely by the RAM on the graphics card?

I was thinking about sticking more RAM in, but XP maxes out at 3GB doesn't it? I could get 4GB of RAM it's so cheap, but would I really notice a difference when gaming in XP?

I have used vista (x64 even) since the second beta and I have never had driver problems. And any changes to the ui + networking options are all benefits. Worth the extra ram usage for me.

Edit: Back to the topic... yes, XP will max out at just over 3GB, Using vista I use a total of 2.5GB RAM to play crysis and just over 2GB for L4D so 2GB in XP is probably not an issue.

Yes, Vista is Fine. I've used it since RTM and had no issues. You obviously have dated hardware if you had driver issues, I've been using 64bit since release and have never had a single driver problem. I've also put it on various other PCs and never have had an issue. Also, driver issues are not a fault of Vista or Microsoft. It's a hardware vendor issue.

I just hate the way Vista feels and does stuff. Even copying files takes an age. I work in a busy IT department for a massive global company and everyone here hates it too. Of course it's only my opinion, but if Vista was so good why on Earth is M$ bringing out 7 so soon? I don't personally know anyone into gaming and PC's in general that prefers Vista over XP. But that's just me.
