Neither is flying a Boeing 747-400 through a storm, or performing a triple heart bypass.

Granted, I wouldn't disagree. Some private doctors/pilots are incredibly well off I imagine though, perhaps more deservedly in my eyes, but we all have different opinions and they should be respected I guess. Football adds meaning to a hell of a lot of people's lives worldwide.

Call it jealousy if you like but it just winds me up how somebody so mind boggingly stupid can earn so much money.

Unfortunately sports are seen as far too important than they should be - it's utterly ridiculous that such morons get paid so much to do so little. It's simply insulting.

Sports are extremely important, how could you think they're not :/?

The football clubs are getting the money from the general public to pay these players, it's supply and demand, I suppose we have to accept that while these young men are earning ungodly amounts of money, it's what people want apparently, if it wasn't then people would stop going to the games, buying the shirts and buying the Sky Sports subscriptions.

My friend's son has a professional contract with Chelsea, and I can tell you that lad has worked harder in the last 5 years of his life than pretty much anyone I know has in their entire life. He's now living with a family in Cobham near the academy, away from his own family and concentrating 24/7 on his one goal. I guarantee you he has worked 100 times harder than you ever have in your life, and yet he still might not 'make it'.

I swear most people here think football involves rolling up on a Saturday in a nice car and kicking a ball around for 90 minutes.

Excuse me but what is this hard work you speak of? He has to turn up to do exercise / training / play football (which no doubt his parents / management take care of) everyday and then rest up at home for the next day. The club pay for all his traveling / living arrangements and basically hold his hand the whole time - and as soon as he makes the grade they'll pay him an obscene amount of money to play more football. If he doesn't "make it" he'll still have been paid crap loads on the way there and then gets to do a normal job like 99% of the population. Oh what a shame.

It's still a very tough job, obviously not worthy of the ridiculous wages, but the shape that the players have to be in is unbelievable. Some players run 13/14K in a 90 minute match, imagine running that far in 90 minutes, most of it being stopping and starting at a very high tempo, all whilst trying to play the highest standard of football on the globe. It's not that easy.

Plenty of junior footballers do it each week for £30 wages.

Plenty of amateurs do it each week for no wages.

Paying them £80,000 PER WEEK is disgusting and indefensible and really sums up society nowadays.

Why are they? I think you'll find education, science, finance and politics are far more important aspects to the modern world. We have ridiculous economic problems throughout the world and we see sportsmen being paid more than the people running the entire infrastructure of the country.

Bit of a sweeping statement? Are you one of these people that think all footballers do is go to work once a week for 90 minutes?

No, they go to work for 3 hours a day and then an hour and a half on Saturday.

However many hours they do or don't work is irrelevant - their salaries are disgustingly inflated.

Lets see - on one hand I could run about for hours a day playing games and staying fit, whilst earning £100k a week.... or sit in an office for longer hours getting no exercise and earning say £400 a week (which I'm guessing is about the average earning in UK at a complete guess).

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

For the few hours of games and exercise they do each week their wages are ridiculous. There's no denying that.

Completely agree on the wages. But I don't agree that their job is 'easy'.

However, I also don't agree people should be paid less than market rate.

Which makes them all morons? Seems like quite the opposite to me.

I didn't say their job was easy.

However, 10 hours "work" a week (read:training and matches) for £80,000 per WEEK, or your average office worker on 40 hour weeks for £17,000 per YEAR?

I know who has it easy out of those two.

Tbh it's just a perfect example which backs up my opinion that fines like that should be goverened by things such as the value of the car, or your income.

If I get fined £60 for parking illegaly (Never have done), that's a weeks wages gone, so why should I pay the same amount as a multi-millionaire? They should have a far, far higher fine than I do because the amount of times I've seen rich people park whereever because £60 doesn't even acknowledge as an amount of money to them is silly.

Quite agree. Means testing fines would be a far better way of dealing with this.

I used to go out with a girl who parked anywhere she liked, her Dad paid her fines for her. It basically worked out about £150 a month for unlimited, anytime parking. Had they means tested that, the fines might've been £500 each rather than £30 and she wouldn't have done it again.

10 hours work per week? What about all the charity work/events, the media, 4 or 5 hours per day training, days at a time away for European games etc. time in the gym, getting up early to go running, never drinking/smoking/staying up late, having to eat a very specific diet? While I do agree they get paid far too much, it's not an easy job.

I remember reading about Europe's biggest ever motoring fine a few years ago. Was some CEO or some such who had been fined for speeding in (I think) Finland, where they do Means testing fines.. was a fantastically huge amount of money, in the millions I think, which would have cost the average Joe a couple of thousand. :)
