Ive just purchased a blu-ray drive for my pc and wondered if i would notice the increased audio quality? I have a soundblaster x-fi xtreme music sound card with a creative 5.1 speaker setup.
Not without a proper HT setup really. With one you'd enjoy the higher bitrate tracks (the lossless ones are a bit of a gimmick and the high resolution ones definitely are).
Although the sound card can be bettered, it's your speakers that wouldn't be able to differentiate between the signals. You might notice some difference, but I very much doubt it.
My pc is mainly used for gaming, uni work and listening to music. Sound wise i currently dont have a problem with it but as i was moving up to blu-ray wondered if it was worth improving the setup. If i was going to improve it (something thats cost affective and noticeable) what hardware would you recommend?
I wouldn't really worry about it. I believe DVD and Blu-ray are both capable of high quality sound (as in above 48KHz upto 192KHz and lossless) although low bitrate and half-assed sound will be a lot more common on DVD.
I noticed that HD audio is much better opposed to DVD audio on my television (Blu-Ray) and on my Mac (HD trailers) and they're both using standard speakers.
