Hi guys

Had a call there from the girl friend and her.

Her driving down the road in her 2006 clio and she could smell plastic buring then smoke started bellowing out from around the steering wheel and were the indicators are.. She pulled in and turned the car off and it stopped smoking. She is getting it recovered now.

But anyidea what has went wrong?

I know nothing about cars but it sounds expensive.

Nothing to worry about ?? LOL

What are you on?
If it bellowed smoke out of the dash, chances are that some electrical wiring has melted down. HOPEFULLY it'll be a component that has melted and you can rectify it fairly simply by replacement.
If however it is the wiring loom then you are looking at a whole different ball game. It will most likely have melted wires adjacent to the faulty one in the loom, rendering the loom basically scrap.

I was just poking fun at BMW/Mini for their PR dept. claiming on watchdog that the combusting Minis isn't a problem because "they are only smouldering".

OT:
This is almost certainly a short inside the dashboard, which has led to melting wires, and maybe more shorts.

It needs the loom in at least the dashboard replaced, frankly. I'd be arguing the point with Renault that this car is not fit for the intended purpose. But they would probably just say that it's the garage's fault because they did not inspect every wire on the car every 100 miles.

The car will probably always smell of burning, particularly when wet. You want rid.

The car has always been serviced at the Renault garage. Will have to see what she is going to do when I get talking to her later. Her dads brother got the car home. He is a mechanic.

And no chance of getting rid. As its only 3 years old

It could be anything, with the smell and smoke being drawn into the cab from heater blower and vents if its something in the engine bay.

other than ripping the dash out to check main loom, try removing steering wheel shroud check on ignition cables, check engine bay when running. starter motor cables - sometimes nuts come lose and short out, smoking your battery.

Odd for 3 year old though.

I've seen the starter motor's circuit routed through the dashboard in some French cars. This circuit *should* be the only un-fused circuit on the car, and *should* never leave the engine bay, in a good design. A fused circuit shouldn't short and start a fire as all the wires are able to take the maximum current the fuse will permit. Something could have been overfused maybe?

Why is it impossible to get rid of a 3 year old car? Whatever the outcome of this, if you're left with the car, sell it.

common fault. Indicator stalk. Replace. Close Thread

And we have a winner.

Had a phone call from her and the mechanic says the same thing. He is ordering one on monday. Will have to replace the whole section due to burning. But at least we found the problem and wont take too long to fix..

I've had a few whisps of smoke fromn the indicator stalk on my old Fiat Cinquecento.

Never bust into flames.
