Hi all,

Decided to purchase a 48 litre tropical fish tank, I have now filled it and set the temp to 24 degrees put the gravel down and some plants (probably need a few more) and will wait 4 days for the tank to settle then was thinking of adding some Neon Tetra's, I think i should probably keep the tank with just the Neon Tetra's for a few weeks to make sure all is ok with the tank but not sure what other fish to add to the tank.

Any suggestions?

Oh and the tank says it can have a maximum length of 58cm's of fish.

You have to 'complete' the nitrogen cycle, and no, I'm not winding you up. Get yourself a water testing kit which reads for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate; pH as well wouldn't be a bad idea either as that is really important especially where ammonia is concerned. If you start adding fish after a few days you will end up killing them, or perhaps worse still, making their lives a misery or shortening their life. Remember you have a very small tank and fish GROW, much larger than people often think so you need to plan for this when making a purchase.
I recommend a very good website for you:

Head over to the forum and you'll find them very helpful. :)

I wouldn't make any decisions until you've got yourself a basic understanding of what is involved.

i got mine a little under a week ago, and got my test kit today, amonia and nitrates read zero so im gonna try and push a spike and then stabalise it, ph is quite high at 7.6 though.

i got advised against just chcuking fish in else it will kill them shortly after, and id rather them be happy.

Im very drunk so ill update tomorrow if i screwed up.

i am a avid fish keeper of many years mainly keep mubuna in a 5ftx2ftx2ft but have had various other kinds including marine and tropcial fish over 15 years and at minute i am building a fish room to cater for 20 tanks and will be breeding in the near future.if you have a local fish shop near you ask them to give you some tank water to mix in with the tank, this will contain all the goodies it needs to kick start you tank, also take a filter sponge to soak up as well, also you can buy pure amonia from you local bq which you can add to help.

if you want the best advice and best website to use this one,its the most rated place to read and learn

i hope this helps

fishfishfish is a good person to talk to but the thing I would thoroughly recommend when choosing fish is go to a decent local fish shop (check the back of practical fishkeeping magazine for a list near you) have a look round and see what you like the look of and what you would fancy keeping. Make a list of them and do some research before buying!

Its you tank get something you want in there not what everyone else necessarily has.

Whatever you use just make sure you either get a bn plec or an otto to keep the algae at bay

48L doesnt give you much room for fish, if you are thinking tetra's personally I'd go for rummynose rather than neons as they are more active and are pretty cool looking. If you really want to go the neon route then get Cardinals instead as they have better colouring overall.

Aye, 48 litres is certainly under ten gallons, not much so small fish like tetras though does still depend on the pH and other water parameters.

Hi mate.
