I just found my old iRiver 140 in a box. I can't find the charger but I plugged in a cheap multi charger and it powered up :D. I also can't find the original headphones but the headphone remote is still there so I tried it with a cheap pair of Sony earphones I had lying around.

I'd forgotten how good this thing sounds. Yes it's a bit of a brick by modern standards but I may see if I can replace the battery and then use it on the tube into work just for the odd looks I'll get from ipod users :)

Does anyone know what type of battery I need for it? Presumably I should be able to get one from maploids or something?

I still have my HP120 but the battery is shot, doesn't hold charge.

Really good MP3 player though

I'd like to know about a replacement battery too

There are loads of batteries available on an auction site. I was thinking about my replacing the one in my H120 but never got around to it.

I take it you've also flashed to Rockbox firmware?

The H140 is an extremely good player and recorder. There aren't any players comparable that i have come across with such a great combination of inputs/outputs, recording capabilities combined with awesome sound quality you get with it; even more so with rockbox installed. I use mine very sparingly as i want it to last forever!!

As suggested already, change the firmware to rockbox which will only take you a few minutes. Then you can fill it with FLAC!! Optical output is superb and is really impressive hooked up to to a DAC or directly to an AV amp.

Suggestion for ebay seller for new battery in this thread (Cameron Sino is the brand of choice):

Earphones:
Don't worry about losing the original earphones. This player deserves much better!! :)

Enjoy!!

So jealous! I dropped mine and broke the hard drive :( was a fantastic player while it lasted, but I'm happy enough with my D2 now!

Just takes a standard IDE laptop hard drive. I've still got my H120 in the cupboard, it's been faultless all these years, excellent piece of kit.

Really? What hard drive goes in it? Would love to have it back!

Have a look at a misticriver forum i linked to earlier. There are only certain drives that will fit/work.

A standard laptop hard drive won't fit. People have been replacing them with specific models of Toshiba 1.8" drives.

I miss my Iriver H10, still has the best sound quality out of all of the players ive owned IMO.

they were good, far better with rockbox but rockbox was too slow on the h10 and the battery life was just terrible :p any of the modern mp3 players are better imo, d2, all the modern sonys, the clix ect. none of them can match the outrageous bottom end my h10 had with rockbox on but they outclassed it in everything else, especially the sony x series walkmans :)

Woohoo, slight update. I forgot my H140 was plugged in for over a day. It now seems to have somehow kicked the battery into life and it holds a charge for several hours. In fact it's been on three bars for several hours. So the original battery seems to be in very good condition somehow. It never did get much use when I originally bought it but I'd assumed it would have died by now. I'm frankly amazed :)

Got rockbox on my Toshiba Gigabeat F20 and F40. They're old by today's standards, but paid £180 back in the day for the F20, and bought an F40 (twice the capacity) just last year second hand since they sound so darn good. With rockbox you can do so much too. I have every simpsons episode on my F40, as well as a gameboy colour emulator and a whole host of games! Batteries still get a good 8h - were about 14 when new. Dropped it more times than I can count, still both work flawlessly.

Oh, and rockbox can take FLAC too. My players came with docks, so just dock them and get FLAC out straight to my amp, sounds alllmost as good as my PC on my basic setup.

Never been to the dark (ipod side) yet. Just gutted toshiba withdrew from the UK market with their Gigabeat players, they're still making some fine machines. Iriver have a good rep too, they seem very indestructible!

I still have the original firmware. When I get time I'll drop Rockbox onto it and probably get a decent set of speakers and run them from the H140's optical out. In all honesty it's a great machine but not very portable by todays standards. I'll still take it on the tube tomorrow for comedy effect though :D

Really quite impressed with the sound quality through some crap headphones for something so old :D

I have 2 iHP140's, I'm fact I'm listening to one right now.

The digital output is awesome, I've got it plugged up via optical to an E-mu 0404 USB, and it sounds very nice.

Are there any newer players with digital out at all?
