What exactly are we paying the extra for on these 5870s?

At current conversion rates, you can buy a brand new 5870 in the states for under £234; and that's the same price for most manufacturers, not some budget brand.

Ye ye, I know we are more expensive in general, higher tax and shipping but surely £300 is a little too steep in comparison.

Just to point out this isn't a dig at OcUK, as we are aware they are easily the cheapest anywhere in the UK. Was just wondering why they are they forced to sell at this price? I just get the feeling we are all 'being had' in this country and by this government... :(

Things are always more expensive over here, its been that way for electronic things since I can remember.

£234 plus VAT = £269.10

Put some shipping on.

However I do agree that the price is currently on the high side, I guess due to demand as always with a new release.

I expect the price the drop to £275 within a week or so.

My question is why though? You can't just hike prices and explain to people; "Sorry, its just the way it is and has always been" as an explanation.

That works providing the price incorporates no form of TAX or VAT, which I'm not sure about in the states. If it was £234 inc 5% VAT in the US, it would work out £223 ex VAT. Apply our VAT and it would be £257 so potentially even less. But yeah, no idea how VAT works over there.

Size of the market. A retailer in the states might order 1000 units of 5870 whereas Fatboy only orders 200.

Whose going to get the better price?

England, the biggest wallet rapist known to mankind...

Visit Latvia :-)

despite it is small country (~2.5mil people) currency LATS is most expencive currency in the world £1 is 0.79santims (santim- latvian pence)

and PC's, pc parts, components are much more expencive

5870s are on sale for €400 to €509 in Ireland! OCUK prices work out about €325. I pay UK prices plus international shipping and it's still cheaper than here. The scale of the US market will allow it to be cheaper again.

TBH the price hike over the USD value is relatively low... quite often we've been ripped off for a simple switch of the $ and £ signs... at the height of it paying 1.8x as much as other parts of the world...

They'll (not OcUK specifically) prolly claim it comes down to some kinda tax or import duty or shipping or something...

I was under the impression US retailers didn't display prices with 'VAT', as taxes on goods varies from state to state over there?
